Harry Freeland Spokane

Memorial service for Harry W. Freeland, 90, was Monday at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-North.

Mr. Freeland, a lifetime Spokane resident, died Friday.

He graduated from Hillyard High School and worked as a meter clerk for Spokane Gas Company and later for Washington Water Power. He retired in 1972.

He was a member of the Washington Water Power Trailblazers.

Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Josephine; two sons, Dwain Freeland of Spirit Lake, Idaho, and Carl Freeland of Port Orchard, Wash.; and six grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

John Cox Spokane

Memorial service for John F. Cox, 86, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. John Vianney Catholic Church. Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Cox died Thursday.

He was born in Coeur d’Alene.

He served in the Army during World War II and later worked in the maintenance department for School District 81.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Gladys; a son, Charles Cox of Spokane; a daughter Joanne Smith of Veradale; and seven grandchildren.

Alvin Luth Coeur d’Alene

Visitation for Alvin N. Luth, 72, is scheduled for today from 5-8 p.m. at the Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene. Service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Coeur d’Alene. Burial will follow at Forest Cemetery in Coeur d’Alene.

Mr. Luth, who was born in Illinois, died Saturday.

He served as a B-29 pilot in the Air Force and was stationed at Fairchild Air Force Base in Spokane.

Mr. Luth moved to Fighting Creek, Idaho, in 1950. He was a farmer in the Worley area until 1985, when he moved to Coeur d’Alene.

Mr. Luth was a part-time real estate salesman and a founding member of Christ the King Lutheran Church in Coeur d’Alene.

He was a former member of the board of directors of the Rockford Grain Growers, the Coeur d’Alene Board of Realtors and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Virginia; a son, Norval Luth of Veradale; a daughter, Sue Metz of Coeur d’Alene; a sister, Earline Luth of Illinois; and four grandchildren.

Herbert Anderson St. Maries

Memorial service for Herbert A. Anderson, 82, will be Friday at 2 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in St. Maries. Yates-Hodge Funeral Home in St. Maries is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Anderson, who was born in St. Maries, died Friday.

He worked on the family farm, Highland Dairy, and served in the Navy during World War II in North Africa, Sicily and the Philippines.

He returned to St. Maries and worked for 10th Street Lumber before working for Potlatch Corp.

Mr. Anderson retired in 1981 and enjoyed cattle farming.

He was a member of the St. Maries Elks Lodge, the Benewah Cattleman’s Association, the Benewah Senior Citizens and was a former member of the Eagles Lodge.

His wife of 42 years, Patricia, died in 1989.

Survivors include a son, Kevin Anderson, and a daughter, Kathleen Flerchinger, both of St. Maries; a brother, Everett Anderson of St. Maries; and four grandchildren.

Lillian ‘Lil’ Knopp Sandpoint

Service for Lillian M. “Lil” Knopp, 68, will be today at 2 p.m. at Coffelt’s Moon Chapel in Sandpoint. Graveside service will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Paul (Idaho) Cemetery.

Mrs. Knopp, who was born in Paul, died Friday.

She had lived in California until moving in 1970 to Sagle, Idaho, where she purchased the View Cafe near Cocolalla, Idaho.

She and her husband later owned Rube’s Excavating and Bonner Concrete Products in Sagle until 1980.

Mrs. Knopp was preceded in death by her husband, Rube.

Survivors include two children, Gerald Knopp of Texas and Linda Blagg of Sagle; two sisters, Pauline Deitz of Rupert, Idaho, and Amelia Hildebrand of Wenatchee; and five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Ronnie Kehrer Spokane

Service for Ronnie Rex Kehrer, 60, will be at 1 p.m. Friday at the Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home.

Mr. Kehrer, who was born in Indianapolis, died Friday.

He served in the Navy from 1955 to 1961.

In 1971 Mr. Kehrer moved to Spokane from Boise.

He worked as a general manager at Hollenback AMC/Jeep auto dealership and later operated Kehrer Kar Korral. He retired in 1989.

Mr. Kehrer was a member of Idaho El Korah Shrine, Idaho Masonic Lodge No. 1, and El Katif Shrine.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara; a son, Lance Kehrer of Spokane; two stepsons, Dennis Gilbert of Yreka, Calif., and Shane Gilbert of Ketchum, Idaho; a stepdaughter, Kelli Ann Gilbert of Boise; two brothers, William and Richard Kehrer, and a sister, Sandra Aker, all of Indiana; and four stepgrandchildren.

John Magers Spokane

Memorial service for John W. Magers, 82, will be at 3 p.m. today at First Presbyterian Church. Private entombment will be at the Pines Cemetery Mausoleum. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Magers, who was born in Deep Creek, Wash., died Sunday.

In 1937 he married Alma Perry in Newport, Wash.

Mr. Magers worked as a property manager for Interstate Rentals for 26 years. He retired in 1978.

He was a member of the Audubon Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite, El Katif directors staff and the Elks Club.

He is survived by his wife; two sons, Bill Magers of Post Falls, and Dave Magers of Priest Lake, Idaho; a daughter, Jo Ann Breach of Spokane; two sisters, Anna Adams and Mary Jane Moore, both of Spokane; a brother, Glen Magers of Spokane; and 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Parkinson’s Association or the Shriners Hospital for Children.

Henry Kirby Lewiston

Private service for Henry L. Kirby, 80, will be held at a later date. Malcom’s Brower-Wann Memorial Chapel in Lewiston is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Kirby, who was born in Chinook, Mont., died Sunday.

He graduated from Rogers High School and served in the Army during World War II in the Burma-China Theater.

In 1946 he married Eugenia Brazington in Missoula, and they moved to Spokane.

He worked as a bus driver for Spokane City Lines and later worked for Phillips Petroleum.

In 1968 he was transferred to Portland and in 1976 he retired and moved to Lewiston.

He was a member of the Eagles Lodge.

Mr. Kirby is survived by his wife; three sons, Patrick Kirby of Eatonville, Wash., Kerry Kirby of Newman Lake and Duane Kirby of Spokane; a daughter, Deanna Simmons of Spokane; two sisters, Pat Nethers of Ohio, and Lora Kennedy of Oilton, Okla.; and 15 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Edna Hurst Silver Springs, Fla.

Memorial service for Edna Hurst, a former Chewelah, Wash., resident, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Free Methodist Church in Chewelah.

Born in Miles, Wash., Mrs. Hurst died Dec. 20, 1996. She was 81.

She was a 40-year Chewelah resident and a homemaker and moved to Silver Springs, Fla., in 1991.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George.

Mrs. Hurst is survived by a daughter, Kathy Yance of Silver Springs; a son, Ben Hurst of Colville; and five grandchildren.

Ruth Pooley Hayden, Idaho

Viewing for Ruth E. Pooley, 69, will be today from noon until 6:30 p.m. at the English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene. Vigil service will follow at 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Funeral Mass will be Thursday at 10 a.m. at St. Thomas Cemetery in Coeur d’Alene. Mrs. Pooley, who was born in Sandpoint, died Monday.

She grew up and attended schools in the Coeur d’Alene area, and worked in the catalog and credit department of J.C. Penny from 1967 to 1990.

Mrs. Pooley was a member of St. Thomas Catholic Church and Take Off Pounds Sensibly (T.O.P.S.).

Survivors include two sons, Kevin Pooley of Coeur d’Alene and Michael Pooley of Post Falls; two daughters, Ellen Keibler of Montana and Margaret Jenkins of South Dakota; and 13 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Elof Larson Greenacres

Memorial service for Elof Larson, 69, will be at 1 p.m. today at the Millwood Community Presbyterian Church. Private inurnment will be at the Orchard Prairie Cemetery. Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Coeur d’Alene, Mr. Larson died Sunday.

He served in the Army with the occupation forces in Japan after World War II.

In 1957 he married Sally Zurlinden in Spokane.

He worked as a truck driver for the remelt department at Kaiser Aluminum’s Trentwood plant for 39 years, retiring in 1987.

Mr. Larson is survived by his wife; a son, Jim Larson of Newport, Wash.; a sister, Elsie Cole of McMinnville, Ore.; and four grandchildren.

Arlene Pierson Salem, Ore.

Graveside service for H. Arlene Pierson, 73, will be at 2 p.m. today at Greenwood Memorial Terrace. Howell-Edwards-Doerksen Funeral Home in Salem is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Pierson, who died May 27, was born in Bellingham.

She farmed in George, Wash., from 1969 until moving to Spokane in 1981.

Her husband, C.R. “Bill” Pierson, died in 1986.

Mrs. Pierson moved to Salem six years ago.

She is survived by two daughters, Patricia Noonan of Salem, and Arlie Pierson of Spokane; a sister Beverly Elvabek of Oak Harbor, Wash.; a brother, Jack Rothenbuhler of Green Valley, Ariz.; and five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
