Counterfeit Traveler’s Checks, $50 Bills Found

From Staff Reports

Several counterfeit traveler’s checks and $50 bills have surfaced in north Spokane during the past few days, police said Tuesday.

On Monday, a woman tried to pay for some merchandise at a North Hamilton pharmacy with a $50 bill that turned out to be phony, police said.

The woman told a clerk at the pharmacy that she got the money at work. Detectives plan to interview the woman.

On Sunday, a teenage boy tried to use a fake $50 bill at a grocery store on North Ash, authorities said.

An employee told the teenager the bill was “obviously fake” and that he was calling police. The customer - described as white, about 17, 5 feet 5 inches tall and 125 pounds - ran away.

Also Sunday, four businesses at NorthTown Mall reported receiving counterfeit travelers’ checks. The Citicorp checks, all for $100, were signed “Lynn T. Ray,” police said.

A well-dressed white woman in her mid-30s passed at least two of the checks, according to police. She was about 5 feet 5 inches, 140 pounds with shoulder-length black hair.
