Cool Ideas Will Net Some Dough

Rick Bonino Food Editor

If you’ve got a way with frozen dough, you could end up with some cool cash.

Rosauers supermarkets and the Kelley-Clarke food brokerage are sponsoring a contest for the best recipes made with Rhodes frozen bread dough. Any type of food is eligible, but it must be an original recipe using a Rhodes product.

Recipes will be judged on flavor (30 points), originality (30 points), ease of preparation (20 points) and appearance (20 points). The first-place winner will receive a $250 Rosauers gift certificate, with $150 for second, $100 for third and $50 for fourth.

To enter, bring your prepared dish, along with the recipe, to any Rosauers bakery department in Spokane or Coeur d’Alene starting March 24. Entries must be received by noon March 26. Winners will be notified no later than April 2.

Be(ef)ginner’s luck

Elsewhere on the contest scene, congratulations to Betty Jean Blackman of the Spokane Valley, whose Spicy Black Bean and Beef Chili took second place and a $500 prize in the recent Washington State Beef Cook-Off in Yakima.

That’s particularly impressive, considering that Blackman was entering her first recipe contest at age 71.

“It was a really neat experience,” said Blackman, one of five finalists chosen from across the state to prepare their recipes for the judges. “I’d encourage anyone to go for it.”

Patricia Whittlesey of Roy, Wash., won top honors for her Beef Tenderloin With Herbed Rice Stuffing. She advances to the National Beef Cook-Off in September.

We’ll print Blackman’s recipe in a future edition of IN Food, as space allows. For a copy of the recipes from all five finalists, send a stamped, selfaddressed, business-sized envelope to: Washington State Beef Cook-Off, 2200 6th Ave., Suite 105, Seattle, WA 98121.

Diet hard

As any frustrated dieter can tell you, the latest fad diet is not the answer for lasting weight loss. You need a complete, long-term change in your eating habits, along with regular exercise.

That’s the focus of the “Think Light! Lowfat Living Plan,” an eight-week program presented by Holy Family Hospital’s Health Education Center. Information includes weekly menus, light recipes, low-fat shopping skills and a exercise program.

There’s a free orientation next Wednesday from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the hospital, 5633 N. Lidgerwood, with weekly classes at the same times beginning the following Wednesday. Cost is $175. For information or to register, call 482-2477.
