Otto Papenfuhs Albuquerque, N.M.

Service for Otto P. Papenfuhs, 95, will be held Friday at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in St. Maries. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in St. Maries. Yates-Hodge Funeral Home in St. Maries is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Papenfuhs, who was born in Wanne-Eickel, Germany, died Friday.

He arrived in New York in 1923, and settled and farmed in Cottage Grove, Minn. for several years.

Mr. Papenfuhs worked construction in Minnesota before going to work for the C.M. S.T. P & P Railroad (later the Milwaukee Railroad).

He moved to St. Maries in 1942 and worked on the Taft Tunnel near Avery, Idaho, as an assistant foreman before starting his own masonry crew for the Milwaukee Railroad in 1947.

Mr. Papenfuhs worked for the railroad in Washington, Idaho and Montana repairing bridges, tunnels and culverts before becoming a carman for the railroad in St. Maries in 1951.

He retired and made rugs and birdhouses before moving to Albuquerque in 1986.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mabel, in 1985.

Survivors include a daughter, Ruth Slick of Albuquerque; a son, Ralph Papenfuhs of St. Maries; a half-sister, Else Bienhold of Germany; eight grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the St. Maries Cross Light Fund or St. Paul’s Lutheran Church Memorial Fund.

Cecilia Ring Spokane

Funeral Mass for Cecilia Marjory Ring, 83, was Tuesday at St. Augustine Catholic Church. A private family interment followed at St. Francis of Assisi Cemetery in Harrington, Wash. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Miss Ring, who was born near Harrington, died Sunday.

She attended St. Joseph’s Academy in Sprague, Wash., and Washington State University.

Miss Ring worked for many years as a legal secretary in Spokane.

She was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church.

She is survived by a sister, Mary Ring of Spokane.

Edward Thoresen Coeur d’Alene

Private inurnment for Edward Clarence Thoresen, 87, will be held later at Coeur d’Alene Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Thoresen, who was born in Duluth, Minn., died Saturday.

He grew up in Minnesota before moving to Spokane in the 1940s, where he worked for Washington Water Power.

Mr. Thoresen operated four different hardware stores, including Manito Hardware, Millwood Hardware and Shadle Park Home Supply.

He sold his last store in 1967 and moved to Twin Lakes, Idaho.

Mr. Thoresen started the Twin Lakes Village development with the Pack River Timber Co. in 1972, which included a golf course, homesites and condominiums.

He retired from Twin Lakes Village in the early 1980s.

Mr. Thoresen was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy, in 1978.

Survivors include his wife, Grace; a son, John Thoreson of Edmonds, Wash.; a daughter, Dorothy McCracken of Spokane; a stepson, Richard Sharp of Packwood, Wash.; a stepdaughter, Margaret Doneen of California; a brother, Jerry Thoresen of Duluth; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Carl Pearson Spokane

Visitation for Carl L. Pearson, 87, will be from 9 a.m. to noon Friday at Johnson Mortuary in Kalispell, Mont. A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Conrad Memorial Cemetery in Kalispell.

Mr. Pearson, who is formerly of the Flathead Valley, Mont., area, died Sunday.

He was born in Kewanee, Ill., and worked for the Great Northern and Burlington Northern Railroads for 48 years before retiring.

Mr. Pearson moved to Spokane about 15 years ago.

Survivors include his wife, Agnes; five sons, Donald Pearson of Sarasota, Fla., Michael Pearson of Greenacres, Wayne Olson of Coeur d’Alene, Dennis Olson of Columbia Falls, Mont., and Larry Olson of Seattle; two daughters, Coleen Wise of Kalispell and Norma Dachwalt of Whitefish, Mont.; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Stephen Seerden Naples, Idaho

Mass of Christian Burial for Stephen Henry Seerden, 33, will be at 4 p.m. today at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Bonners Ferry, Idaho. Service and interment will take place later in Texas. Bonners Ferry Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Seerden, who was born in Victoria, Texas, died Sunday from injuries suffered in an automobile accident near Bonners Ferry.

Mr. Seerden worked construction and various occupations in Texas before moving to the West Coast in 1994 and had done mission work in Spokane and Sandpoint.

He moved to Naples in 1996 and worked for Welco Lumber Mill.

Survivors include his parents, Robert and Dorothy Seerden of Corpus Christi, Texas; two sisters, Robin Tally and Lisa Stevenson; a brother, Tom Seerden; and his grandmother, Robbie Seerden.

Melvin ‘Mel’ Jackson Coeur d’Alene

Memorial service for Melvin L. “Mel” Jackson, 73, will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at His Place Evangelical Free Church in Post Falls. English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Jackson, who was born in Colorado, died Monday.

He served as a tailgunner on a B-24 during World War II.

Mr. Jackson graduated from Colorado A&M with a degree in economics before being recalled to the service for the Korean War.

He later worked as an engineer for several telephone companies before retiring from General Telephone in 1975.

Mr. Jackson moved to the Coeur d’Alene area in 1968 from Pocatello, Idaho, and was a member of the His Place Evangelical Free Church.

Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Louise; and two sons, Scott Jackson of Coeur d’Alene and Dan Jackson of Priest River, Idaho.

Stella (Halverson) Johnson Spokane

Visitation for Stella Christine (Halverson) Johnson, 86, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. today and from 8 to 11 a.m. Friday. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Spokane First Convenant Church. Burial will follow at 2:30 p.m. at Riverside Memorial Park Cemetery. Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Johnson, who was born in Spokane, died Sunday.

She graduated in 1930 from North Central High School.

Mrs. Johnson worked for the Crescent Department Store.

In 1932 she married Carl Johnson and was a homemaker. They lived in several cities in Washington state until returning to Spokane after World War II.

Mrs. Johnson was a member of the Spokane First Covenant Church and sang in the choir.

She retired in 1992 from her part-time work for Covenant’s Bethany Home near Millwood.

Her husband died in 1967.

She is survived by a daughter, Audrey Ponten of Bellevue; four sons, Raymond Johnson of Bellevue, Dale Johnson of Tonasket, Wash., Terry Johnson of Las Vegas and David Johnson of Palo Alto, Calif.; 13 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First Covenant Church.

Marcely (Gregg) Rydquist Spokane

Memorial service for Marcely V. (Gregg) Rydquist, 78, will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Heritage Funeral Home.

Mrs. Rydquist, who was a 16-year resident of Spokane, died Monday.

She was born in Lewistown, Mont., and graduated from high school in Helena.

In 1938 she married Roy Rydquist in Great Falls and was a homemaker.

Mrs. Rydquist is survived by her husband of 59 years; three sons, David Rydquist of Rapid City, S.D., Dennis Rydquist of Seattle and Gregg Rydquist of Great Falls, Mont.; a daughter, Jody Bergum of Spokane; a brother, James Gregg of Spokane; her stepmother, Josephine Gregg of Kalispell, Mont.; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
