Athol’s Asian Invasion

You might not expect to find an authentic Asian-style seasoning sauce coming from Athol, Idaho.

But that’s the home of Hong Brand, a tasty water-based sauce subtly flavored with fish extract - a traditional Asian ingredient - as well as sugar, vinegar, chili peppers and garlic.

Brian Reed of Athol’s Spice Shop makes the sauce in mild and hot versions using a recipe from his friend, Hong Newman, owner of Oriental Gifts & Foods in Coeur d’Alene.

Price: $4-$4.50 for 12 ounces.
