Ryne Sandberg, the 1984 National League MVP from Spokane’s North Central High School, played his final major league game Sunday, as perhaps did fellow future Hall of Famer Paul Molitor.

Brett Butler, another well-liked veteran who played his final game Sunday, might be considered less automatic to make the Hall of Fame.

Sandberg, the longtime Chicago Cubs second baseman who retired once before, said he won’t be tempted to come back next year when spring training rolls around.

“It’ll hit me in December or January, but I won’t be back,” Sandberg said. “I have other things to do.”

Sandberg, 38, set several team records in addition to hitting more home runs as a second baseman, 277, than any other major leaguer. He finished with a .285 career batting average and 282 total home runs.
