Girl Scout’s Gold Award Given To Marie Fleming

Marie Fleming, a member of Girl Scout Troop 445, earned her Gold Award, Girl Scouting’s highest achievement. For her service project, she taught Opportunity Elementary students about the dangers of tobacco. Fleming, a graduate of University High School who now attends Eastern Washington University, is the daughter of Donna Williams of Spokane.

Joy Wilken, Sprague, received the Thatcher Award from the Jonas Babcock Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Wilken was recognized for her work with young people for more than 20 years in such groups as 4-H, Camp Fire, Teens in Action, and Congressional Award Club.

The Thatcher Award is the highest given by the DAR.

John Frucci was recently installed as Pacific Northwest District 46 Lt. Governor by the Spokane Valley Kiwanis Club. He also received the Hixson Award for dedicated service to Kiwanis, and was made a lifetime member.

Ken Keto was also made a lifetime member, while Ted Bantis and Jack Goodwin received Legion of Honor awards for 25 years of service. Warren Erickson was named Kiwanian of the Year.

Russell Williams was installed as president, with Warren Erickson as president-elect; Verna Carr, secretary; and Linda Hannigan, treasurer.

Daniel Grimes, Jarrod Lowe and Adam Lausche, students at Shadle Park High School, were named Commended Students in the 1998 National Merit Scholarship Program. They were among 35,000 students nationwide honored for displaying exceptional academic promise.

Christina Padilla and Annie Robinson took top honors in the Spokane Soap Derby’s Fall NDR Rally.

In the Stock division, Padilla, a sixth-grade student at Browne Elementary, placed first; Robinson, a student at Deer Park High School, placed first in the Superstock event.

Earlier, both girls won Spokane’s All-American Soap Box race and a trip to Akron, Ohio, for the national race, in which Robinson took third.
