Four Area Officers Honored For Bravery

Four area law enforcement officers were recently honored by the Jonas Babcock Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution for exceptional bravery.

Sgt. David Fray of the Spokane County Sheriff’s Department received the American Police Hall of Fame Legion of Honor Award for grievous injuries received in the line of duty in 1993. He also received the Silver Star for Bravery from the American Police Hall of Fame for risking his life during the same incident.

Deputies Joe Mastel and Eric Epperson of the Spokane County Sheriff’s Department and Trooper Jim Hill of the Washington State Patrol received the Law Enforcement Medal of Honor.

The officers risked their lives to save people trapped by the West Plains Fire.

John Guin, Spokane, and Andrea Powers, Ritzville, Wash., were among 15 spring graduates at the University of Oregon recognized for academic achievement and elected to the Order of the Coif, a national honor society for law students in the top 10 percent of their graduating class.

Two Medical Lake High School graduates were recently honored by the Jonas Babcock Chapter of the Daughters of American Revolution.

Cadet Chris Welch received the Bronze ROTC Medal for excellence in leadership, academic ability and patriotism. Welch, now a student at Washington State University, also received a four-year scholarship.

Cadet Chief Master Sgt. Monica Easter, now a sophomore at Medical Lake High, received the JROTC Award for activities with her unit that exhibited leadership, academic ability and patriotism.

Marine Lance Cpl. David Brasefield received a Letter of Appreciation for superior performance of duty, displaying remarkable dedication and initiative while assigned to Camp Pendleton, Calif.

He is the son of Karen and Robert Brasefield, Cheney, and a 1996 graduate of Cheney High School.

Megan Mangan, a 1993 graduate of Gonzaga Prep, was commissioned as 2nd lieutenant through the ROTC program upon graduation last spring from Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wis.

She is the daughter of Spokane Police Chief Terry and Charlotte Mangan.

Robert Hagey and James Kepka, Medical Lake High School students, were selected to attend last summer’s Northwest Youth Leadership Conference at Pacific Luthern University in Parkland, Wash.

The conference allows high school sophomores and juniors to attend seminars taught by leaders of industry, business, government, the military and higher education.
