Martha Balzaretti Hayden Lake, Idaho

Visitation for Martha Louisa (Rake) Balzaretti, 88, will be held Friday from 3-8 p.m. at Yates Funeral Home, Hayden Chapel, and Saturday from 10-1 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in St. Maries. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in St. Maries.

Mrs. Balzaretti, who was born in Wisconsin, died Monday.

She grew up and attended schools in Wisconsin and then went to boarding school for four years.

In 1935 Mrs. Balzaretti moved to Harrison Flats, where she ranched and operated a dairy farm on 360 acres. She sold her farm and moved to Hayden Lake in 1966.

She attended North Idaho College and became a certified nurses assistant. She worked at Sunset Terrace Nursing Home in Coeur d’Alene for more than 16 years before retiring in 1974.

A musician, Mrs. Balzaretti entertained at local dances and nursing homes.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Karl Rake, in 1962.

Survivors include her husband, Ernest; two sons, Clarence Bates of St. Maries and Larry Rooks of Ellensburg; a brother, Sherburn Mason of Minnesota; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Minnie (Sphar) Bogue Spokane

Service for Minnie Agnes (Sphar) Bogue, 89, will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at the First Christian Church in Sandpoint. Interment will take place in Kansas. Coffelt Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Bogue, who was born in Kansas, died Sunday.

She grew up in Kansas, where she lived until moving to Sandpoint in 1942.

Mrs. Bogue moved to Spokane in 1991 and was a member of the First Christian Church in Sandpoint and the Girl Scouts U.S.A.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard.

Survivors include three daughters, Elaine Linscott of Spokane, JoAnn Hally of Oregon and Yvonne Rankin of St. Anthony, Idaho; six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Norma Conover Coeur d’Alene

Service for Norma Denice Conover, 74, is pending. Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Ms. Conover, who was born in Klamath Falls, Ore., died Sunday.

She lived in California for many years and had worked with the first female survey crew in California.

Ms. Conover moved to Coeur d’Alene in 1994.

Survivors include a son, James Conover of Virginia; two daughters, Karen Thomas of Coeur d’Alene and Diane Kavanagh of California; and six grandchildren.

Garry Johnson Sr. Spokane

Visitation for Garry A. Johnson Sr., 66, will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at Thornhill Valley Funeral Home. Service will follow at 1 p.m. at the Veteran of Foreign Wars Post 1435.

Mr. Johnson, who was born in Bonners Ferry, Idaho, died Sunday.

He graduated from North Central High School and Kinman Business University.

Mr. Johnson served in the Marine Corps during the Korean War.

He practiced as a certified public accountant and most recently owned and operated Dishman Cab for seven years. He retired in 1997.

Mr. Johnson was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1435.

Survivors include his companion, Peggy Banks of Post Falls; two sons, Garry Johnson Jr. of Rathdrum, Idaho, and Michael Johnson of Green River, Wyo.; four daughters, Debra O’Connell of Ennis, Mont., and Pamela Glen, Terri Waters and Janelle Koch all of Spokane; a brother, Leland Bailey of Port Orange, Fla.; his stepfather, Burl Benscoter of Rathdrum, Idaho; and 11 grandchildren.

John Suor Spokane

Funeral Mass for John A. Suor, 31, will be at 3 p.m. today at Our Lady of The Lake Catholic Church in Tum Tum, Wash. Interment will follow at the Scotts Valley Cemetery in Tum Tum. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Suor, who was a 21-year resident of the area, died Saturday.

He was born in Yokosuka, Japan, and moved to Nine Mile Falls 21 years ago.

Mr. Suor worked as a cook for 14 years at St. Joseph Care Center, east campus.

Survivors include his mother, Linda Suor of Spokane; his father and stepmother, Joe and Nancy Suor of Spokane; two brothers, Steve Suor of Seattle and Tim Suor of Ephrata, Wash.; two sisters, Angela Suor of Nine Mile Falls and Theresa Suor of Lewiston, Idaho; a stepbrother, Brent Sparks of Kent, Wash.; a stepsister, Kari Sullivan of Memphis, Tenn.; and his stepgrandmother, Joyce Kromm of Spokane.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Spokane Humane Society or the Inland Northwest Blood Center.

Daniel Stevenson Coeur d’Alene

At the family’s request, no service will be held for Daniel A. Stevenson, 64. English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Stevenson, who was born in Stateline, Miss., died Friday.

He had worked as an electronics engineer before retiring and moving to North Idaho in 1990.

Survivors include his wife, Cheyrel; four sons; two daughters; three brothers; and 10 grandchildren.

Edna Poe Priest River, Idaho

Funeral service for Edna Ethel Poe, 89, will be at 1 p.m. Friday at the Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home in Newport, Wash. Graveside service will follow at the Evergreen Cemetery in Priest River.

Mrs. Poe, who was born in Vale, Ore., died Sunday.

In 1925 she married William Poe in Salem, Ore., and she worked as a homemaker.

Mrs. Poe was a 21-year resident of Priest River and a member of the New Testament Church.

Her husband died in 1995.

Survivors include four daughters, Priscilla Dodd of Tacoma, and Laura Reeder, Wilma Torres and Donna Poe all of Priest River; a son, David Poe of Morley, Mo.; four sisters, Berdie Summers and Thelma Reidt both of Hay, Wash., Ruth Thompson of Spokane and Carol Henderson of American Fork, Utah; two brothers, Nathan Summers of Seattle and Phillip Summers of Otis Orchards; 21 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren and 18 great-great-grandchildren.

Geraldine Fissell St. Maries

Private service for Geraldine S. Fissell, 93, will be held at a later date in California. Yates-Hodge Funeral Home in St. Maries is in charge of local arrangements.

Mrs. Fissell, who was born in Stockton, Calif., died Saturday.

She was a long time California resident and recently moved to St. Maries.

Her husband of 59 years, Forrest, died in 1984.

Survivors include a son, Robert Fissell of California; and two daughters, Beverly Beeghley of St. Maries and Margery Beitzel of California.

John ‘Jack’ Haynes St. Maries

Memorial service for John “Jack” Haynes, 69, will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Yates-Hodge Funeral Home in St. Maries. Mr. Haynes, who was born in St. Maries, died Tuesday. He grew up in St. Maries and worked as a ranch hand and also for St. Maries Lumber Co., Carney Pole Co. and Emerald Creek Garnet.

Mr. Haynes had served in the Marine Corp from 1945-48 and then returned to St. Maries.

He worked as a gypo logger in the timber industry for many area logging contractors, including Jack Dittman.

Mr. Haynes was a member of the St. Maries Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Masonic Lodge.

Survivors include a son, James Haynes of California; two daughters, Jackie Crile of Wyoming and Janet Palladino of St. Maries; 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Bernard Benson Avery, Idaho

Memorial service for Bernard E. Benson, 63, will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Yates-Hodge Funeral Home in St. Maries. Burial will take place at Woodlawn Cemetery in St. Maries.

Mr. Benson, who was born in Troy, Idaho, died Sunday.

He grew up and graduated from high school in Troy in 1952 and then served with the Air Force for a brief time.

Mr. Benson moved to Calder, Idaho, after his military service and then settled in Avery.

He worked for the Milwaukee Railroad, and in the wood and construction industry in the mid-1970s.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Sandra in 1989.

Survivors include a son, James Benson of Moscow, Idaho; his mother, Grace Benson of Troy; a brother, Ray Benson of Priest Lake, Idaho; and one grandson, Hampton.

Stanley Fredekind Post Falls

Memorial service for Stanley A. Fredekind, 54, will be Thursday at 3 p.m. at Calvary Lutheran Church in Post Falls. English Funeral Chapel in Post Falls is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Fredekind, who was born in Coeur d’Alene, died Sunday.

He moved to Plummer in 1949 and graduated from Plummer High School before joining the Navy.

Mr. Fredekind moved to the Coeur d’Alene area 23 years ago, and was a member of the Calvary Lutheran Church in Post Falls and a past member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Survivors include his wife of 30 years, Carole; two sons, Dirk and Kiel Fredekind, and a daughter, Kara Fredekind, all of Post Falls; his father, Walter Fredekind of Coeur d’Alene; and a sister, Carol Erickson of Post Falls.

Eleanor Carter Kootenai, Idaho

Service for Eleanor J. Carter, 83, will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. at Coffelt’s Funeral Service in Sandpoint. Interment will follow at Pinecrest Memorial Park in Sandpoint.

Mrs. Carter, who was born in North Dakota, died Sunday.

She attended Kootenai Grade School and graduated from Sandpoint High School.

Mrs. Carter worked for Kootenai School for many years, retiring in 1978.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles.

Survivors include three daughters, Kareen Jones of Ohio, Carol Thompson of Sandpoint and Maryetta Donnelly of Oregon; two sons, Ray Carter of Alaska and Don Carter of Oregon; three sisters, Ruth Carter of Sandpoint, Maryetta Mayer of Spokane and Hazel Hamann of Kootenai; 19 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
