Thieves Didn’T Like Lamb Stew?

While Janine Meunier and her family were moving from Connecticut to Idaho three years ago, someone stole their car and the U-Haul trailer containing most of their worldly possessions.

When the abandoned trailer was later found, the thieves had left behind a few things — including Meunier’s cast-iron skillets and her file box of family recipes handed down through three generations.

To celebrate that small bit of good fortune, and to recoup some of the losses, Meunier and her mother, Diane Wehry, have come out with a cookbook of those family recipes titled “Homemade With Love.”

With such dishes as Chicken Liver Pate, Persian-Style Lamb Stew and Sweet Potato/Zucchini Bread, the 76-page, spiral-bound, self-published book is a step above community cookbooks that rely on cans of cream of mushroom soup.

“We don’t use a lot of packaged stuff,” says Meunier. “It’s kind of an experiment to see if people really want home-cooked meals that aren’t your average meatloaf.”

She and Wehry are planning more books and also are selling upscale kitchen accessories through their Web site, www.altog.com.

Give a gobbler

The Spokane Food Bank is again asking people to donate turkeys to help less fortunate families in the community this Thanksgiving.

Frozen turkeys in their original packaging can be dropped off weekdays between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. at the warehouse, 1234 E. Front. Donations are requested by Nov. 20; grocery store gift certificates and cash are also accepted.

Christmas lites

There’s also help for those who struggle with eating too heavily during the holidays.

Registered nurse Jennifer Fletcher will present a class called “Healthy Eating for the Holidays,” including heart-healthy recipes and samples, Tuesday at 2 p.m. in Room 320 of St. Luke’s Rehabilitation Institute, 711 S. Cowley. There’s no charge; call 838-7213 for more information.
