Stuff Or Not?
Health experts have raised concerns in recent years about the safety of cooking stuffing inside a turkey. On the other hand, many cooks insist that stuffing is far more flavorful baked in the bird than in a casserole dish.
If you choose to stuff your turkey, Butterball recommends the following guidelines:
* Prepare stuffing just before placing in turkey. Be sure all ingredients are already cooked; saute vegetables, use only cooked meats and seafood and use pasteurized egg products instead of raw eggs.
* Place stuffing in turkey just before roasting; do not stuff the turkey the night before.
* Make sure turkey is completely thawed before stuffing. Loosely stuff both do not pack stuffing tight.
* Use a meat thermometer to make sure the internal temperature of the stuffing reaches 160 degrees before removing turkey from the oven.
* Do not stuff turkeys that are cooked on an outdoor grill or water smoker, or at high-temperature or other fast-cook methods.
