Saints Outlast Vandals

Area college basketball

Gunta Basko hit 7 of 11 shots from the floor, including 4 of 6 from 3-point range, and finished with a game-high 25 points Friday to spark the Siena Saints to an 83-79 victory over the University of Idaho Vandals in the Saint Mary’s Christmas Classic women’s tournament in Moraga, Calif.

The Vandals (3-8) shot 55 percent (27 of 49) from the field and outrebounded Siena 38-25, but the Saints (6-2) hit 10 of 24 3-pointers while Idaho connected on just 3 of 10 from long range. The Vandals also made just 22 of 37 free throws.

Laura Bloom topped Idaho with 17 points. Darci Pemberton added 12 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Tasha Rico chipped in 14 points and five assists.

Whitney Martindale scored 13 points and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds, her first career double-double, to spark the Cougars (5-4) to a blowout victory over the Bulldogs (2-7) in the first round of the Lady Griz Holiday Classic in Missoula.

Washington State trailed 22-21 with 7:26 remaining in the first half before going on a 17-5 run to take control of the game.

Sarah Barrett added nine points and eight assists for the Cougars, who surpassed last season’s victory total with their fifth win.

The Cougars will play Montana tonight in the championship game.
