North Stars, Twins Split A Legion Doubleheader

(From Sports Replay, June 6, 2000): The American Legion baseball doubleheader Sunday between the Twins and North Stars was non-league.

The North Stars and Twins split a doubleheader Sunday in AAA American Legion action at Shadle Park High School.

Jim Hryniewicz had three hits, including a pair of doubles, to lead the North Stars to an 8-7 win in the opener.

In the second game, Derek Bruce belted a two-run home run to key a four-run seventh and the Twins went on to a 9-4 victory.

Steve Hare had three hits, stole three bases, drove in a pair of runs and scored twice to spark the Blue Devils to an 11-6 win over the Bandits at Gonzaga Prep.

George Bell collected three hits and scored three times for the winners.

Boxing

Spokane’s Frank Vassar won by unanimous decision over Sean Jewell of Bend, Ore., in an eight-round cruiserweight bout at Lucky Eagle Casino in Rochester, Wash.

The three judges had Vassar winning by scores of 80-72, 80-72 and 80-71.

Auto racing Spokane’s Dave Allison had an elapsed time of 9.89 seconds and hit 133.94 mph to win the Super-Pro drag race at Spokane Raceway Park on Saturday.

Randy Reynolds (10.39) won the Pro division, while Jesse Saxby (13.25) was tops in Street.

John Gamble was the Main Event winner in the Street Stock Invitational. Todd Hegel won the Main Event in the Hobby Stock class and also turned in the top time of 22.14 seconds. Pat Norris was the Main Event winner in Hobby Compact.

At State Line Speedway, Tony Holcomb took the lead on the 29th lap and raced to victory in the Grand American Sportsmen class 35-lap Main Event.

Rusty Mathis won the Main Event in Bump to Pass, while Cheryl Hamblin took first in Northwest Mini-Trucks.

Chattaroy’s Pete Munk, a 44-year racing veteran, grabbed the lead on the 16th lap and hung on for a victory in the Old Time Racers class.
