Kenneth Smith Mullan, Idaho
Memorial service for Kenneth L. Smith, a lifetime Mullan resident, will be at 2 p.m. today at the Wallace Elks Lodge. Shoshone Funeral Service in Kellogg is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Smith, who was born in Valier, Mont., died Friday. He was 81.
He graduated in 1937 from Mullan High School, and married Alice “Cissy” Engebertson in Wallace in 1939.
He worked for Asarco for 47 years and retired as a shop foreman.
Mr. Smith was a member of the Wallace Elks and Eagles lodges, and the Osburn Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He served as mayor of Mullan, on the school board and as fire chief.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Dale Smith of Whitefish, Mont.; three daughters, Judy Lee of Spokane, Peggy Prolo of Kingston, Idaho, and Kim Listoe of Bellevue, Wash.; a brother, Ralph Smith, and a sister, Margaret Gipson, both of Mullan; 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Wallace Elks Lodge.
Bertha Sam Post Falls
Service for Bertha Luise Sam, 91, was Tuesday at 2 p.m. at English Funeral Chapel in Post Falls. Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery.
Mrs. Sam, who was born in Germany, died Friday.
In 1950 she moved to Edmonton, Alberta, in 1950 from Germany. In 1964 she moved to California. She had lived in Post Falls since 1993.
Her husband, Adam, died in 1974.
She was a homemaker and enjoyed knitting.
Survivors included two daughters; Elli Seidler of Post Falls and Margot Popowich of Edmonton; six grandchildren, Arthur Wendlandt, Leona Browne, Eleanor Stockdale, Richard Seidler, Alan Popowich and Bonnie Gremlich; and eight great-grandchildren.
Clara Petersen Davey Kellogg
Memorial service for Clara Petersen Davey, 93, will be at 2 p.m. today at Mountain Valley Care Center in Kellogg. Shoshone Funeral Service and Crematory in Kellogg is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Davey, who was born in Fauske, Norway, died Saturday.
In 1924 she worked as a cook for miners at the American Girl Mine in the Sandon Mountains of Canada.
She moved to Kellogg in 1928 and married Vincent Davey in 1933. He died in 1989.
She was a homemaker and enjoyed skiing and dancing.
Survivors include a daughter, Sonya Davey Chaney of Lewiston, Idaho; a sister, Gunly Petersen of Spokane; three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Karen Nelson Bonners Ferry, Idaho
Graveside service for Karen Gayle Hatfield Nelson, a lifetime Bonners Ferry resident, will be at 11 a.m. today at Grandview Cemetery, Bonners Ferry, burial will follow. Bonners Ferry Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Nelson, 57, died Saturday.
She graduated from Bonners Ferry High School, and married Edward Nelson in 1967.
She was an X-ray technician and worked for the Boundary Community Hospital for several years. In 1970 she went to work for Dr. Clifford Edwards and continued there for 23 years. She worked for Cedu Educational school system in Bonners Ferry until her death.
Survivors include her husband; three sons, John, Del and Bill Nelson, all of Bonners Ferry; her father, Lynn Hatfield of Bonners Ferry; three sisters, Marlyn Mastre of Bonners Ferry, Lynda Dowd of Battle Mountain, Nev., and Brenda Borgmann of Aurora, Neb.; a brother, Allen Hatfield of Glenwood, Iowa; and five grandchildren.

Everett Hill Bonners Ferry, Idaho
A Mass of Christian Burial for Everett Louis Hill, 83, will be at 4 p.m. today at St. Ann’s Roman Catholic Church. Internment will be in the Grandview Cemetery, Bonners Ferry. Bonners Ferry Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Hill, who was born in Curtis, Neb., died Aug. 26 in San Jose, Calif.
He married Lucille Colling in 1939 in McCook, Neb., and they moved to Bonners Ferry in 1941.
He farmed and harvested crops for several years and worked for Thomas Chevrolet and the Kootenai Valley Creamery, all in the Bonners Ferry area. He was also a janitor and maintenance man for Bonners Ferry High School before retiring in 1981.
Mr. Hill was a charter member of St. Ann’s Church and Bonners Ferry Playground Association. He was also an active volunteer at the Visitor’s Center.
Survivors include his wife at home; three daughters, Lois of Milwaukee, Ore., Doris of San Jose, Calif., and Anna of Kirkland, Wash.; a son, Dale Hill of Poway, Calif.; 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Julian `Bud’ Benoit Sandpoint
Memorial service for Julian C. “Bud” Benoit, 83, was Tuesday at Sandpoint United Methodist Church. Inurnment was at Forest Cemetery, Coeur d’Alene.
Mr. Benoit, who was born in Joplin, Mo., died Aug. 31.
He graduated from high school in Portland and attended the University of Idaho, where he was voted Outstanding Boxer of the 1938 NCAA Tournament in Charlottesville, Va.
Mr. Benoit married Jewel Holte in Coeur d’Alene in 1939, and served in the Army Air Corps during World War II.
He worked for Dr. Scholl’s Shoe Co. while attending the UI, and for Powell’s Shoe Store in Coeur d’Alene before starting his own company, Benoit’s Bootery in 1949 in Sandpoint. He sold the Bootery in 1960 and worked in real estate and as an investment broker before retiring in 1989.
Mr. Benoit was a member of the Sandpoint United Methodist Church and Elks Lodge No. 1376. He held a presidential appointment to the Small Business Administration Advisory Board. He was inducted into the UI Hall of Fame in 1992.
His wife died in 1998.
Survivors include a son, James Benoit of Santa Rosa, Calif.; a daughter, Dianne Keegan of Sandpoint; a sister, Mary Lutz of Los Angeles; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Mark Meier Newport, Wash.
Service for Mark Jay Meier, 39, will be at 11 a.m. today at Newport First Baptist Church. Graveside service will follow at 3 p.m. at Spokane Memorial Gardens. Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home in Newport is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Meier, who was born in Spokane, died Saturday from injuries suffered in an automobile accident.
As a child, he moved with his family to Hawaii, Deer Park, back to Hawaii, and then to Colville, Wash. He returned to Deer Park in 1976 and graduated from high school there in 1978.
Mr. Maier worked as a jeweler and first studied under his father at Teneff Jewelry Mfg. Co. in Spokane.
Mr. Meier moved to Newport in 1991, where he operated Platinum Plus Jewelry.
On May 1 he married Sherry Miller.
Survivors include his wife; his parents, Larry and Julie Meier of Coeur d’Alene; and a sister, Melody Meier of The Dalles, Ore.
Ron Bowler Hayden, Idaho
Visitation for Ron Bowler, 61, will be from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. today at English Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene. Graveside service will follow at 10 a.m. at Riverview Cemetery in Coeur d’Alene. A celebration of his life will follow at 11 a.m. at Trinity Luthern Church.
Mr. Bowler, who was born in Coeur d’Alene, died Saturday.
He graduated from Coeur d’Alene High School and married his high school sweetheart, Gladyce Job, in 1957.
They moved to Missoula in 1959 and He owned a carpet and computer business.
They moved to Hayden in 1993, where Mr. Bowler developed commercial property while he was semi-retired.
He attended Friends Church and was a member of the Spokane Fly Fishers and North Idaho Fly Casters.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Curt and Rick Bowler, and two daughters, Vicky Velin and Nancy Malikie, all of Missoula; his mother, Ingrid Carson of Coeur d’Alene; and eight grandchildren.

Charles Darrar St. Maries
Memorial service for Charles D. Darrar, 68, will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Woodlawn Cemetery, St. Maries. Yates-Hodge Funeral Home in St. Maries, is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Darrar, who was born in St. Joe City, Idaho, died Monday.
He grew up in St. Joe city and Clarkia, Idaho, and became a lumberjack.
In 1950 he married Georgia Egbert in Coeur d’Alene, and they lived in St. Joe City until moving to St. Maries in 1958.
He owned and operated Sunset Logging until his death.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Mike Darrar of St. Maries and Danny Darrar of Deary, Idaho; a daughter, Patricia Elders of St. Maries; a sister, Marta Thompson of Coeur d’Alene; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
