Thursday’s games

The Spokesman-Review

Marlins 5, Reds 2: At Cincinnati, struggling Alex Gonzalez drove in a pair of runs, helping Brad Penny win his third straight start. Florida reliever Armando Benitez earned his 18th save and set a team record of 262/3 innings without allowing an earned run. Luis Aquino held the previous mark of 261/3 innings in 1994. The Marlins took two of three in the series, blunting a Cincinnati surge that vaulted the Reds into first place in the Central Division. Florida has won six of its last eight.

Brewers 3, Dodgers 1: At Milwaukee, Ben Sheets outdid Jeff Weaver, allowing one run on four hits over seven innings, and Milwaukee sent Los Angeles to its 11th loss in 13 games. Coupled with their 2-1 win over Los Angeles in 12 innings 12 hours earlier, the Brewers won a home series against the Dodgers for the first time since April 1998, when they took two of three at County Stadium.

Cardinals 6, Pirates 3: At St. Louis, Scott Rolen homered and drove in four runs, giving him a major league-leading 49 RBIs, in St. Louis’ victory over Pittsburgh. Jeff Suppan (4-4) worked six solid innings to help the Cardinals end a three-game losing streak and split an abbreviated two-game series with the Pirates. Tuesday’s game was postponed because of rain and spot flooding.

Padres 4, Rockies 3 (10): At Denver, rookie Khalil Greene hit a tying, two-run homer in the ninth inning and Phil Nevin had a sacrifice fly in the 10th, lifting San Diego over Colorado. Greene connected with one out off Shawn Chacon for his second home run of the season.

Braves 6, Phillies 1: At Philadelphia, Andruw Jones hit a grand slam and Jaret Wright took a shutout into the eighth inning, leading Atlanta to a victory over Philadelphia.

Giants 5, Diamondbacks 4 (10): At San Francisco, Damon Minor singled in Barry Bonds with two outs in the 10th inning to lead San Francisco past struggling Arizona for its season-high sixth straight win.
