Spokane Symphony Chorale plans audition at music center

The Spokane Symphony Chorale will hold auditions Aug. 28 and 29 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Holy Names Music Center, 3910 W. Custer Drive.

The auditions will include a prepared solo, sight reading and vocalization. An accompanist will be provided.

Tenors and basses are particularly needed. To schedule an audition, call the chorale secretary at 466-2823.

Poetry contest

Poetry Scribes of Spokane is hosting a poetry contest.

Anyone 18 or older can enter up to two poems in each of two categories: free verse or rhymed. There is a 40-line limit.

The entry fee is $5 per poem; cash prizes will be awarded. All entries must be received by Sept. 15. The winners will be announced at a luncheon on Oct. 15.

Send two copies of your poems, one with a name and address and the other without identification, to Donna Hilsabeck, 7718 E. Glass Ave., Spokane Valley, WA 99212.

Call for artists

•The City of Moscow is looking for artists for a public project in South Couplet Park.

The purpose of the project is to pay tribute to the city’s heritage, enhance the entrance to the park and welcome visitors to the area. Total budget is $23,000.

Application deadline is Aug. 26. Applications are available by forwarding a mailing address to dheath@ci.moscow.id.us, by calling the Moscow Arts Commission at (208) 883-7036, or online at www.ci.moscow.id.us/mac.

•The Spokane County Interstate Fair is looking for sunflower-related work by area artists in keeping with this year’s theme, “Find the Sun at the Fair.”

There will be specific sunflower themes each day. Prizes for first-, second- and third-place winners will include a ribbon and two tickets to the fair, and the artwork will be put on display.

•The Spokane Watercolor Society is seeking applicants for its 10th Regional Juried Watermedia Exhibition, which will run Sept. 30 to Oct. 26 at the Fox Theater, 1001 W. Sprague Ave.

Classes and workshops

•Monart Drawing School is offering day camps for children ages 4 and 5, with the theme “Walking on the Moon.” Classes will be offered Aug. 23 through 25 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. or 1 to 3 p.m. at Spokane Art Supply, 1303 N. Monroe St.

•Malidoma World Drum and Dance Studio is presenting a drum and dance camp Aug. 26 through 28 on Lake Coeur d’Alene.

Classes will be offered in Congolese dance and drumming, Afro-Cuban drumming, tribal-style belly dance and West African drumming. The $195 fee includes lodging, meals, classes and a T-shirt.

•Art on the Edge, a program of St. Vincent dePaul in Coeur d’Alene, is offering free art classes for ages 6 through 18.
