Bed race will aid Fairfield Good Samaritan Center

Join the Fairfield Good Samaritan Center Bed Resters Bed Race on Saturday.

Teams of five will race worn-out beds along a 100-foot stretch of Railroad Street in Fairfield beginning at noon.

Admission is $25 per team, or $35 per business team. Prizes will be awarded.

Proceeds will benefit the Fairfield Good Samaritan Center by raising money for new beds and furniture. The center, owned and operated by the Evangelical Lutheran Good Samaritan Society, is a 43-bed skilled nursing center with 10 assisted-living and 17 senior-living apartments.

Swimsuit drive

New children’s swimsuits and swim diapers are now being accepted at NorthTown and Spokane Valley Malls’ customer srvice cnters through June 20.

Items may be dropped off Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Since swimwear is required by most public pools, every year many children are turned away from a summer swim because they do not have the proper attire.

Donated items will be available to children without swim gear on a first-come, first-serve basis beginning June 15 at the following locations: East Central Community Center, 500 S. Stone St.; Northeast Community Center, 4001 N. Cook St.; West Central Community Center, 1603 N. Belt St.; Spokane Valley YMCA, 2421 N. Discovery Place; and Spokane Valley Community Center, 10814 E. Broadway Ave.

Golf tournament

Play 18-holes of golf on Friday at the Downriver Golf Course and benefit the Spokane Neighborhood Action Programs.

Registration starts at 11 a.m., and a shotgun start begins at 1 p.m.

Admission is $70 and includes golf, golf cart and dinner.

Prizes will be awarded to the top three teams in net and gross, the farthest drive, closest to the pin, 50-50 raffle, putting and a hole-in-one.

Loreen Miller Memorial Bike Ride

The 12th annual Loreen Miller Memorial Bike Ride will be next Sunday beginning at Mt. Spokane High School, 6015 E. Mount Spokane Park Drive, Mead.

Riders may choose from a variety of routes and start times: The true century route (100 miles) begins at 7 a.m.; the true half-century (50 miles) starts at 9; and a family ride (12 miles) begins at 10.

Registration is $35 and will be at 6 a.m. Fee includes T-shirt and lunch.

Proceeds from the ride will benefit Cancer Patient Care, a nonprofit organization that provides emergency assistance for prescriptions, utilities, food and other services for cancer patients and their families.

New to this year’s event, 25 generous donors will be chosen to join celebrity cyclist Frankie Andreu on a premiere ride on Saturday at 11:30 a.m., followed by a reception at the Red Lion Inn at the Park at 3 p.m.

Andreu is a retired cyclist and was captain of the 1999 and 2000 Tour de France-winning U.S. Postal Service team. He has competed in the Tour de France nine times, a current American record; two Olympic Games, one in 1988, where he placed eighth, and the other in the 1996 Atlanta games, where he placed fourth; as well as in numerous World Cup events, world championships, and spring classics.

In addition to the ride, a carbo-load dinner and behind-the-scenes look at the Tour de France given by Andreu will be open to all riders on Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Washington State University Riverpoint Campus, 310 N. Riverpoint Blvd.

Blanchard Daze auction

An auction to benefit the Blanchard (Idaho) Daze celebration will be at the Blanchard Fire Station on Highway 41.

Join auctioneer Larry Cunningham on Saturday at 11 a.m. and bid on a variety of new and used items.

The Blanchard Daze celebration will be held in August. This year’s theme is “History, Heart and Home,” and a T-shirt design contest for the celebration will be held during the auction.

A $50 prize will awarded.

Contest entries must be 81/2 inches by 11 inches, must be camera ready and black and white, must include this year’s theme, and cannot be computer generated, in pencil or include shading.

Hop-A-Thon

The Martin Luther King Jr. Family Outreach Center will host a benefit for the Muscular Dystrophy Association on Wednesday.

Pledges can be made during the hop-a-thon event at The Shop, 924 S. Perry St., from 5 to 7 p.m.; at the center, 845 S. Sherman St.; or by calling (509) 455-8722.

The event will increase children’s awareness of disabilities and will benefit individuals in Eastern Washington, North Idaho and northeastern Oregon who live with a neuromuscular disease.
