The Spokesman-Review

Community Colleges of Spokane’s Paul Knutson pitched 8 2/3 no-hit innings Wednesday in an 8-0 victory over Blue Mountain CC in the second game of a Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges baseball doubleheader at Spokane Falls CC.

Knutson, who had a no-hitter until Trent Hollingsworth’s solid single in the ninth inning, struck out 10 and walked one – with two outs in the seventh.

In game one, Sasquatch pitcher Luke Farden threw a five-hitter in a seven-inning, 11-1 win. CCS took the lead in a four-run third, led by Aaron Rockey’s two-run triple.

The Sasquatch (24-9, 15-7) are tied for first place in the East Division with Columbia Basin, which swept third-place Treasure Valley CC.

Track and field

University of Idaho distance runner Mary Mamau earned Big West track athlete of the week honors for the second straight week after her performance at last Sunday’s Cardinal Invite.

Mamau finished 10th in the “A” section of the 1,500 meters with a season-best time of 4 minutes, 22.37 seconds, which ranks second in the Big West and 19th in the nation this season.

Whitworth junior pitcher Jo Sonnett and freshman utility player Heather Case were named to the first team, along with Pacific Lutheran senior outfielder Jackie Nuechterlein (Lakeside-Nine Mile Falls) and junior outfielder Liz Stuhlmiller (Christian Heritage).

Pirates senior outfielder Patti Stranger (Coeur d’Alene) and senior pitcher Alana Klaus (Gonzaga Prep) made the second team, while junior first baseman Amanda Norwood (East Valley) and sophomore catcher Lindsay Davis earned honorable mention.

The 6-foot, 195-pound Alaska native lettered in both 2002 and 2003 at WSU. Last season, however, he was plagued with injuries.
