Man dies when car hits I-90 barrier

The Spokesman-Review

A Spokane man died Friday night when his car crashed on the Interstate 90 offramp to Lincoln Street.

Alan J. Earlscourt, 35, was exiting the freeway shortly before 11:30 p.m. when his ‘91 Chevrolet Blazer struck the offramp’s barrier, according to the Washington State Patrol. He died at the scene.

The crash also injured his passenger, Rebecca L. Johnson, 46, of Chandler, Ariz.

Johnson was listed in serious condition Saturday at Sacred Heart Medical Center.

Neither was wearing a seat belt, according to Trooper Mark Baker. The crash is still under investigation, but alcohol was involved, he said.

Baker said another crash on Interstate 90 that he handled earlier in the evening showed the difference that seat belts can make.

In that collision, about 10:30 p.m. Friday near the Sprague exit, a driver in an SUV suffered a seizure and her foot floored the gas pedal. A passenger in the vehicle tried to pry the driver’s foot off the pedal, but the SUV – reaching 90 to 100 mph – slammed into a car, Baker said.

Everyone involved in the collision was wearing a seat belt, he said, and they all received only minor injuries.
