AppleSox pluck first win in playoff series with RiverHawks

Wenatchee took a big step toward defending its West Coast Collegiate Baseball League championship Tuesday night, scoring a run in the eighth inning for a 4-3 win over the Spokane RiverHawks at Wenatchee Valley Colleges’ Paul Thomas Field.

The AppleSox lead the best-of-3 series 1-0 heading into Thursday’s 6:30 p.m. game at Avista Stadium. The third game, if necessary, would be at Avista on Friday.

The AppleSox are looking for their third championship in four years.

Wenatchee led 3-1 after a three-run third, but Spokane fought back with single runs in the fourth and sixth.

Jayson Kramer, who entered in the seventh, earned the win. The save went to Nick Haughian, who pitched the ninth, stranding a RiverHawks runner at second base. Jeremy Hefner, 5-2 during the regular season, took the loss.

Paul Martin, Chase Powell and Greg Biagi had two hits apiece for the RiverHawks, who won the regular-season title by one game over Wenatchee.

The teams split six games during the regular season.

CdA Triathlon

The 23rd annual Coeur d’Alene Triathlon and fourth annual Coeur d’Alene Duathlon will be held Saturday.

Racers will swim a 1.5-kilometer triangular course starting and finishing at City Park beach before leaving on a 40-kilometer bike ride and finishing with a 10-kilometer run.

The events feature a wave start with the first competitors going out at 7 a.m. Prizes are awarded in a variety of divisions.

Golf

Ryan Benzel of Seattle Golf Club shot his second consecutive 5-under-par 67 to win the Pacific Northwest Assistants Championship at Tumwater (Wash.) Valley Golf Club.

Benzel, a Ritzville native, pocketed $1,000 for his three-stroke win. He and runner-up Adrian Burtner of Columbia Edgewater Country Club advance to the PGA Assistant Professional Championship, Oct. 26-29 in Port St. Lucie, Fla.

Adam Syverson of Indian Canyon Golf Course shot 139 to place fourth, one shot ahead of Tim McElhinny of Painted Hills Golf Course.

•Amy Eneroth of Washington State University shot a second-round 6-over 77 and missed the cut at the 106th U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club in North Plains, Ore.

Eneroth, a Mead High graduate, finished two rounds at 155 and missed the cut by four strokes.

University of Washington graduate Paige McKenzie of Yakima topped stroke-play competition by two shots after carding a 70 for a total of 3-under 139. The top 64 advanced to match play, which begins today.
