Wing Bowl foes face heated fight
Planning to scarf down a few hot wings at a Super Bowl party on Sunday?
You’ll have to put away quite a few to top Terri “Two Dozen” Rushfeldt who will be defending his wing-eating title at the Northern Quest Casino.
Wing Bowl 3 kicks off at 1 p.m. during the casino’s Super Bowl XL party in the Pend Oreille Pavillion. Rushfeldt – who gobbled down 78 wings during last year’s competition – will face 10 challengers in a contest that heats up with every round. The wings start out in a mild sauce and get spicier.
The other Wing Bowl contestants qualified for the competition by winning eating contests sponsored by local radio stations which included gulping creamed corn, pork and beans, jalapeno peppers and cream cheese pies, according to a news release.
The winner gets a trip for two to Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas and, of course, a chance to repeat in next year’s wing bowl.
Admission to the party is $25 and includes a buffet of stadium-style food and seating near one of five huge televisions for the game. For tickets or more information, call 343-6700.
If you’re hosting a party at home, you can spice things up with your own wing-eating extravaganza. Look inside today’s food section for a classic Buffalo Chicken Wings recipe. Just dial up the hot sauce if you want them to be scorching.
Fresh delivery
The Second Harvest Food Bank will be giving more fresh produce to local families thanks to a grant from Kraft Foods.
The $65,000 grant will help with distribution of produce and other perishable goods to the more than 300 charities the food bank serves. Part of the money also will be used to help The Women and Children’s Free Restaurant with the meals it provides to families in the lower level of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church.
“Many of our clients simply can’t afford to buy fresh produce and their health suffers for it,” said Jason Clark, Second Harvest executive director in a news release.
Without the right equipment and storage space, perishable donations can go to waste before it can be given to families. Marlene Alford, director of the Women’s and Children’s Free Restaurant, said the grant will help them store produce passed out to clients each week during their Friday night “take-out” program.
