Canucks use power play to rally past Flames

Brendan Morrison scored a power-play goal at 2:53 of overtime to give the Vancouver Canucks a 4-3 victory over the Calgary Flames on Saturday night in Vancouver, B.C.

With Vancouver on its 10th power play, Morrison scored from the side of the net after Calgary goalie Miikka Kiprusoff got caught out of position chasing an errant slap shot from Vancouver defenseman Sami Salo.

The win was the first of the season for the Canucks against Calgary in five tries and pulled them within four points of the Northwest Division-leading Flames.

The Flames scored twice in a 44-second span early in the third period to take a two-goal lead only to have the Canucks storm back with two power-play goals in the final 8 minutes to send the game into overtime.

Maple Leafs 3, Oilers 2: At Edmonton, Alberta, backup goalie Mikael Tellqvist made 36 saves and Chad Kilger scored the winning goal early in the third period in Toronto’s victory over the Oilers.

The Maple Leafs have won seven of their past eight games and 8 of 12 in Edmonton.

Devils 3, Sabres 2: At Buffalo, N.Y., Brian Rafalski had a goal and an assist, and Martin Brodeur made 26 saves to help New Jersey beat the Sabres. Jamie Langenbrunner and Scott Gomez also scored for the Devils, who have won three straight for the first time since November.

Canadiens 4, Senators 1: At Montreal, Radek Bonk and Mathieu Dandenault ended lengthy goal droughts as the Canadiens scored four times in the first period to beat Ottawa.

The Canadiens ended a four-game losing streak and won for the second time in their past eight games.

Avalanche 3, Blue Jackets 2 (SO): At Denver, Alex Tanguay and Marek Svatos scored shootout goals to help Colorado maintain its dominance over Columbus.

The Avalanche, 16-0-1-1 all-time against Columbus, won their fourth in a row.

Sharks 3, Kings 2: At San Jose, Calif., Scott Thornton scored two goals and Evgeni Nabokov got his first victory in nearly three weeks, leading the Sharks through a scoreless third period in a victory over Los Angeles. Patrick Marleau also scored for the Sharks, who rallied from an early 2-0 deficit for their third straight victory.

Wild 4, Mighty Ducks 1: At St. Paul, Minn., Manny Fernandez made 22 saves and matched his career high with his sixth straight victory in Minnesota’s win over Anaheim.

Rangers 4, Panthers 0: At New York, Henrik Lundqvist made a career-high 38 saves in his second career shutout – both against Florida – and fellow rookie Petr Prucha scored his 20th goal in the Rangers’victory over the Panthers. New York snapped a three-game losing streak.

Hurricanes 3, Islanders 0: At Uniondale, N.Y., Martin Gerber made 30 saves for his sixth career shutout, and Carolina scored three goals in a 6:14 span in the second period to beat New York for a home-and-home sweep.

Bruins 6, Lightning 3: At Boston, Milan Jurcina scored the first two goals of his NHL career and Patrice Bergeron had the go-ahead goal to lead the Bruins to a victory over Tampa Bay.

Thrashers 4, Penguins 3: At Pittsburgh, Marc Savard broke a tie with a power-play goal with 3:25 to play, and Ilya Kovalchuk had two more goals to help Atlanta beat the Penguins for the second straight night.

Eric Godard of the Islanders was suspended for two games by the NHL for punching Hurricanes forward Justin Williams. … The Devils will honor former captain Scott Stevens and fellow defenseman Ken Daneyko next month by retiring their numbers. … Sabres co-captain Chris Drury was held out of the team’s game Saturday against New Jersey because of a mild groin strain.
