True ‘Zags fans’ are supportive

The Spokesman-Review

Robert Bierman’s letter (Jan. 1, “Zags haven’t played up to potential”) is simply arrogant.

I ask you, Mr. Bierman, what Division I Top-10 college team did you either play for or coach? What gives you the authority to pass judgment on the Gonzaga men’s basketball team regarding their effort? How can you even call yourself a “Zags fan”?

My husband and I have the most fortunate opportunity to have season tickets in The Kennel and sit right behind our bench. We have seen the anguish on the players’ faces when they miss a shot, make a turnover or any number of other errors that happen in sports.

Real Zags fans are encouraging and proud of our team. It is a shame they lost to Memphis. Why? Because they played a good game against the fourth-ranked team, and they work hard day in and day out to become better and win. I am proud of Coach Few’s decision to give the team time off to visit their families for Christmas, even at the expense of not being as prepared for Memphis.

If our Zags lose every game the rest of the season (which they won’t) I will still be proud of them. I am proud of their skills on and off the basketball court. They are true ambassadors of basketball, good sportsmanship, Gonzaga University and the entire Spokane area. These are men my kids look up to as role models. Our dedicated coaches and players deserve your appreciation, not your arrogant criticism.

I am a true Zags fan. Maybe you should find another team to “support.”
