Hayden man, 18, killed in crash

An 18-year-old Hayden man was killed Tuesday evening in a head-on collision with a logging truck that caused both vehicles to overturn.

Shane T. Scott was driving downhill about 5:30 p.m. on state Highway 41 south of Oldtown, Idaho, when his 2001 Jeep Cherokee crossed the centerline and hit a truck hauling an empty log trailer, according to State Police. Scott was pronounced dead at the scene.

The truck driver, Fred Bell, of St. Maries, and his passenger were uninjured. All three men were wearing seat belts.

An investigation is ongoing.

Canada honors World War I vet

A Spokane resident who is Canada’s only remaining veteran of World War I was honored Tuesday with a presentation from that country’s oldest infantry unit.

At a ceremony in the restaurant of a north Spokane Rosauers store, John Babcock was made a member of the Royal Canadian Regiment Association and became its “patriarch,” or oldest member. The organization for veterans of the regiment has been in existence for 125 years.

Babcock, who turned 108 this summer, enlisted in the Canadian army at 15 and was shipped overseas. The army discovered that he and about 1,300 enlistees were too young and kept them on non-combat special duty in England. He moved to the United States after the war and settled in Spokane in 1931.

Fugitive found with guns in car

A fugitive added to his lengthy rap sheet Monday when police nabbed him in Spokane Valley with two guns in his car.

Mark C. Perry, 36, refused to move his right hand from the car’s front console after he was pulled over, said Sgt. Dave Reagan, of the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office. When detectives removed Perry from the car, they found a loaded .38-caliber semiautomatic pistol. They also found a loaded .22-caliber semiautomatic pistol on top of a bag on the passenger seat. Perry is not allowed to possess firearms.

The Eastern Washington Fugitive Task Force had been seeking Perry on a warrant charging him with escape from community custody. Perry’s criminal history includes theft, assault, bail jumping and failure to cooperate with police. He was booked at Spokane County Jail for his warrant and two felony counts of first-degree unlawful possession of a firearm.
