Fresh sheet: CdA’s Cajun Cook-off heats up

First the bad news: Mardi Gras is over.

The good news is that Mardi Gras-style revelry is still on tap for this weekend in Coeur d’Alene.

The annual Art on the Edge mARTi gras Cajun Cook-off and Street Festival is Saturday from 6 p.m. to midnight. For $45 in advance, revelers can wander through five downtown locations for live music and food prepared by local chefs for the cook-off. Tickets are $50 the night of the cook-off and festival. The locations include Brix Restaurant, Cricket’s Downtown Bar and Grill, The Eagles Club, Tito Macaroni’s and Barrel Room No. 6.

The evening also includes a parade led by the 2008 mARTi gras king and queen as well as traditional Mardi Gras accoutrements such as beads, masks and king cake.

Ticket holders can also attend the Coeur d’Alene Resort’s Winter Blues Festival. Tickets can be purchased at Java on Sherman, the Coeur d’Alene Resort concierge desk, St. Vincent de Paul on online via Art on The Edge at www.artontheedge.org/marti. For more information, call (208) 676-0917.

Art in the Edge also will host a Kids’ Carnival as part of the weekend festivities on Saturday morning from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Resort Plaza Shoppes. For $5 per child, kids can participate in a variety of arts activities. The cost includes pizza and a drink and there are scholarships available for those who cannot pay.

Proceeds from the mARTi gras party benefits Art on the Edge, a nonprofit organization of St. Vincent de Paul that offers free art classes for kids.

Have a Heart

Supporting two local fundraisers is as easy as eating out.

At Red Robin, owners will donate 50 cents from every burger sold through Feb. 24 to the Vanessa Behan Crisis Nursery. The shelter is for Spokane-area children at risk for abuse and neglect. Diners can also make an additional donation by buying paper hearts at the restaurant for $1 each.

The benefit, now in its eighth year, has raised more than $93,000 and provided 31,000 hours of safety, according to a news release.

Red Robin locations are: 725 Main Ave., 9904 N. Newport Highway, and 14736 E. Indiana Ave.

At Boston’s Pizza, heart-shaped pizzas will be sold through Sunday to benefit the Children’s Miracle Network. For each pizza sold, Boston’s will donate $1 to Sacred Heart Children’s Hospital.

The pizzas are available in the store, for take-out or delivery. An additional donation can be made by purchasing a paper heart for $1.

Boston’s The Gourmet Pizza is located at Indiana Avenue and Evergreen Road near the Spokane Valley Mall. To place an order, or for more information, call (509) 927-4284.
