Weary players hang tough at World Series

Card by card, pot by pot, the World Series of Poker pressed on Friday at Las Vegas, with prize money already a certainty for the players who remained, but the effects of a grueling schedule creeping in.

Players were given an extra hour of rest before resuming play, hours after a long night in which they burst through the money bubble. Those who remained placed themselves in the top 9.7 percent of the field – winners of some piece of a $64.3 million pie in the no-limit Hold ’em tournament.

Henry faces suspension

Free-agent running back Travis Henry faces a one-year suspension after the NFL ruled he again tested positive for marijuana, The Denver Post and Rocky Mountain News reported, citing unnamed NFL sources.

The Post reported that an unnamed source close to Henry confirmed the league said he tested positive for marijuana in May, which would be Henry’s third offense and put him in line for a one-year suspension.

• Suspended NFL player Adam “Pacman” Jones appeared before a grand jury investigating a Las Vegas strip club shooting.

The Las Vegas Sun reported the grand jury questioned the 24-year-old Dallas Cowboys cornerback Jones for about 90 minutes behind closed doors.

•The Washington Redskins have won the latest round in a 16-year court battle against a group of American Indians. In a ruling dated June 25 and first circulated Thursday, U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly ruled that the youngest of the seven Native American plaintiffs in the case waited too long after turning 18 to file the lawsuit that attempts to revoke the Redskins trademarks.

Russian vaults highest

Russia’s Yelena Isinbayeva cleared 16 feet, 6 inches at the Golden Gala meet in Rome, improving on her previous world-record pole vault of 16-51/4.

Isinbayeva cleared the record height with ease on her second attempt.

•Double-amputee sprinter Oscar Pistorius missed out in another attempt to qualify for the Olympics, but sliced more than a second off his 400-meter time from last week.

The South African finished in 46.62 seconds to place seventh in the 400 meter B race at the Golden Gala meet. He must run a 45.55 to qualify for the Olympics.

Lightning GM resigns

Jay Feaster resigned as general manager of the Tampa Bay Lightning, four years after the team he helped assemble won the franchise’s only Stanley Cup championship.

•A person close to the situation confirmed that the Los Angeles Clippers have approached the Knicks about acquiring Zach Randolph in an effort to make up for the sudden loss of Elton Brand to free agency.

•The Minnesota Timberwolves signed first-round draft pick Kevin Love. He will make about $2.6 million this season and $2.8 million next year.

•Daniel Santos knocked out Joachim Alcine with a right-left combination 2:10 into the sixth round to defend his World Boxing Association light middleweight title at Montreal.
