Beaton captains Huskies to title

Andrew Beaton, a Mead High graduate and senior at the University of Washington, helped the second varsity 8 repeat as national champions at the men’s Intercollegiate Rowing Association championships on the Cooper River in Cherry Hill, N.J., June 5-7.

Beaton was elected team captain and the Huskies won three gold medals and two silvers to win the second varsity championship for the fourth time in the last five years.

College scene

Gonzaga University pitcher Cody Martin and rower Hanna McClintock have earned All-America honors.

McClintock, a junior, has been named to the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) All-America second team. She is only the second women’s rower and first rower since 2004 to garner CRCA All-America accolades.

Martin has been named to the Pro-Line Athletic National Collegiate Baseball Writers of America (NCBWA) freshman All-America second team.

•Whitworth University athletes Samantha Kephart (swimming) and Scott Donnell (tennis) have been named to ESPN The Magazine at-large academic All-America college division teams.

Kephart is a third-team selection who graduated this spring with a 3.51 grade-point average. She was recently named Whitworth’s Senior Women’s Athlete of the Year.

Donnell is the first Whitworth men’s tennis player to become an academic All-American. He graduated in May as a double major in theology and business management with a 4.0 GPA.

•Washington State University golfers Nick Grigsby (Central Valley) and Amy Eneroth (Mead) were named to the Pacific-10 Conference all-academic team.

Grigsby was named all-academic second team. Eneroth was named honorable mention.

Maddy Lorenz, a former two-time MVP on the Ferris volleyball team, is transferring to San Francisco State University from Concordia College in New York, where she was selected to third-team all-conference as a freshman.

Softball

Hall of Famers named

Seven former players, a sponsor/manager and a Hall of Honor inductee, will be honored at the annual Inland Empire Softball Hall of Fame banquet July 12 at the Sons of Norway Hall.

Former players in the Class of 2008 are Gary Crisp, Hal Sautter and Denny Wederspahn, all fastpitch; and Pat Fiorillo, Patty Knudston, Denise Schlepp and Dan Schaffer, all modified. Also to be inducted is Ron Jackson as a sponsor/manager. Dee Scott is going into the Hall of Honor.
