Sports in brief: No injuries in rink roof collapse

The Spokesman-Review

The roof of a skating rink partially collapsed while the ice was being resurfaced during a youth hockey tournament in Pennsylvania, but no one was injured.

The collapse happened at the Rostraver Ice Garden, about 30 miles southeast of Pittsburgh. Emergency crews searched the building using cadaver dogs and thermal-imaging cameras.

The hockey teams were in the locker room when a 100-by-200-foot section of the roof fell in, and the only person on the ice was the worker who was resurfacing it with a Zamboni.

Beckham set for Man U reunion

Seven years after leaving Manchester United, David Beckham faces the team that turned him into a global star for the first time when AC Milan hosts the three-time winners of the Champions League.

The England midfielder, who never faced United during four seasons at Real Madrid, will get the opportunity Tuesday during a second loan spell at Milan from the Los Angeles Galaxy of MLS.

“It’s one of the biggest games for me,” said Beckham, who won the competition in 1999 with United. “I don’t think it’ll be a big problem (playing United).”

Connick: Saints win boosts Big Easy

New Orleans native Harry Connick Jr. says the economic and emotional boost from the Saints’ Super Bowl victory is giving the city unprecedented momentum in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

Connick, who sang the national anthem for Sunday’s Daytona 500, says the tourism money brought in to local businesses from the team’s playoff run is carrying over into Mardi Gras, resulting in the “greatest time in the history of our city, at least as long as I’ve been alive.”

Connick says the city is excited and proud of the team.
