Area roundup: Idaho earns school-record 12th win

Idaho’s women’s soccer team bounced back from an early deficit to beat New Mexico State 4-1 in Western Athletic Conference play Sunday in Moscow, the Vandals’ school-record 12th win of the season.

The Aggies scored in the second minute, but Idaho (12-3, 3-0 WAC) responded with four unanswered goals.

Erica Hart tied the game in the 42nd minute, and less than 3 minutes later Chelsea Small scored to give the Vandals a 2-1 lead. Christina Boddie and Jill Flockhart added second-half goals.

Small broke two school records Sunday. The goal was her 12th of the season, and with two assists she broke Idaho’s single-season scoring record with 28 points.

• Freshman Katie Turney scored her first career goal in the 34th minute to give Washington State a 1-0 victory over Arizona in Pac-10 play in Pullman.

The Cougars (6-7, 1-1 Pac-10) recorded a season-high 20 shots and held the Wildcats to nine.

• Gonzaga opened its West Coast Conference season with a 4-0 loss to fourth-ranked Portland in Spokane. Lauren Ames had nine saves for the Bulldogs (5-8-1, 0-1 WCC).

• Jamie Walker made a career-high 11 saves for Eastern, but Caitlin Pulver’s goal gave Sacramento State a 1-0 Big Sky Conference win in Sacramento, Calif. The Eagles dropped to 0-11-1 overall, 0-2 Big Sky.

• Kate Deines’ goal in the 15th minute on a penalty kick propelled Washington to a 1-0 victory over No. 25 Arizona State in Pac-10 play in Seattle as the Huskies improved to 9-3-1 overall, 2-0 in conference.

• Demi Wignot, Quincy Moore and Kristin DeCroix scored to give North Idaho (9-3-1) a 3-0 victory over the University of Idaho club team in Coeur d’Alene.

Men’s soccer

Gonzaga added to its woes at San Diego, losing 2-1 in West Coast Conference play.

James Partee scored his first goal of the season for the Bulldogs (3-8, 0-4 WCC) in the 16th minute before the Toreros scored two second-half goals for the victory.

Gonzaga’s record at San Diego is 2-10 since the Bulldogs joined the conference in 1993, and Gonzaga last won at USD in 2005.

• Fourteenth-ranked Cal stayed undefeated in conference play with a 4-0 victory over Washington in Seattle, dropping the Huskies to 7-4-1 overall, 1-3 Pac-10. Matt Van Houten scored for Washington on a penalty kick in the 77th minute.

Men’s golf

Gonzaga recorded only six birdies in the final round and finished in 14th place at the Brickyard Collegiate Championship in Macon, Ga.

The Bulldogs shot a tournament-high 305 Sunday to finish with a 54-hole score of 905. Georgia won the team title with an 857.

Gonzaga’s Travis Johnsen, who was four strokes out of the lead heading into the final round, shot a 77 for a 219, good for a tie for 25th place and the best finish among the Bulldogs.

The individual winner was Georgia’s Russell Henry, who shot a final-round 68 for a 206.

Junior hockey

Jesse Collins scored twice and had an assist as the Spokane Braves rallied from a 1-0 deficit to beat the Grand Forks Border Bruins 4-1 at Eagles Ice-A-Rena in a Kootenay International Junior Hockey League contest. Rance Hughes and Guisseppe Dippolito also scored for the Braves (7-6), and Garrett Barr made 17 saves.
