In brief: Sounders finally win at Salt Lake

Soccer: Patrick Ianni and Lamar Neagle scored in the second half and the Seattle Sounders ended Real Salt Lake’s unbeaten streak against MLS opponents at Rio Tinto Stadium at 29 games with a 2-1 victory Saturday night. The win was also the Sounders’ first at Rio Tinto.

Ianni opened the scoring in the 71st minute, tapping a cross from Nate Jaqua inside the right post with Salt Lake (5-2-2) playing a man down after defender Jamison Olave received a red card for dragging down Mike Fucito just outside the box in the 58th minute. Fredy Montero, who came into the game as a second-half reserve, found Jaqua off a corner kick to set up the scoring play.

The goal ended Salt Lake’s shutout streak at 409 minutes, dating to a 1-0 loss to Portland on April 30.

Seattle (5-4-5) made it 2-0 in the 84th minute when Neagle blasted a right-footer from outside the box and squeezed the ball just inside the right post out of the goalkeeper Nick Rimando’s reach.

Salt Lake showed some offensive life in the 88th minute when Nelson Gonzalez tracked down a throw-in from Luis Gil and put the ball in the back of the net to cut the Sounders’ lead in half.

50,305 at Qwest watch friendly

Soccer: Michael Arroyo scored an unassisted goal in the 37th minute to help Ecuador tie Mexico 1-1 on Saturday in an exhibition game in front of 50,305 fans at Qwest Field in Seattle.

Mexico opened the scoring in the seventh minute when Jorge Torres Nilo scored off a corner kick.

It was Mexico’s second visit to Seattle since a 1-0 win over China in 2008.

“The first time we were here with the Mexican national team it was a bit of a gamble and a little bit of an unknown if a game would be successful here,” said Soccer United Marketing spokesman Gabriel Gabor. “This time we knew it would be a successful event.

“To bring in 50,000-plus fans is fantastic considering we were wedged between a Champions League final in the morning and a Mariners-Yankees game right across the street in the evening.”
