Casino serves up Cajun Cook-off

A Gathering Place at the Coeur d’Alene Casino will host a Mardi Gras Cajun Cook-off from 6 to 9 p.m. on Saturday.

Executive Chef Adam Hegsted has invited other chefs from around the area to showcase their favorite dishes inspired by pre-Lenten indulgence at a public competition on Saturday. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased at TicketsWest or online at www.ticketswest.com.

Chefs participating include Ryan Stoy of Downriver Grill; Troy Chandler of Bonsai Bistro; Nick Mikkelson of Bardenay Restaurant and Distillery; Derek Eakin of 315 Martini and Tapas and the Greenbriar Inn; Brett Petticolas, Terry Alexander and Matt Mayer of the Coeur d’Alene Casino; and Gabe Cruz of Manito Tap House.

“The chefs really put their best foot forward to try and showcase their restaurants,” Hegsted said in an email message. “It’s important to get out there and let people know who you are.”

Among the dishes planned are Po Boy Spyder Sliders, Cajun Crawfish Hush Puppies, Evan Williams Bread Puddin’, Crawfish Boil, Bananas Foster, Oysters Rockefeller, Andouille-Shrimp Bruschetta, Cajun Burger with Fried Oyster, Gator Tots, Gumbo, Jambalaya and Etouffee. Any chefs who could like to jump into the competition at the last minute can contact Hegsted at ahegsted@ cdacasino.com.

Judges will taste and rate the dishes before the doors open 6 p.m. Then, guests will get to sample dishes and choose a favorite for the People’s Choice Award. Winners will be announced before the end of the evening.
