Indians ride five-run fifth to win over Ems

EUGENE – The Indians sent 10 batters to the plate in a five-run fifth inning that backed a strong start by Kelvin Vasquez in his first victory of the season for Spokane in a 5-0 win over the Eugene Emeralds in Northwest League action Monday.

Vasquez (1-2) allowed two hits over 5 2/3 innings. He struck out four and walked three as the Indians improved to 8-10 in the second half and 28-28 overall.

Spokane’s win, combined with Everett’s 11-10 loss to Salem-Keizer, forged a three-way tie atop the second-half standings in the North. Vancouver, also 8-10, was off Monday.

Spokane did all of its damage in the fifth inning, starting with a pair of two-run home runs. Janluis Castro led off the inning with a single and scored on Jamie Jarmon’s first home run of the season. The next batter, Eduard Pinto, singled, and Joe Jackson followed with his first homer of the year.

After Barrett Serrato flied out, Evan Van Hoosier singled, chasing Emeralds starter Jimmy Brasoban. Reliever Tyler Hale got Cam Schiller to fly out, but Marcus Greene followed with a single to drive in Van Hoosier. Jordan Akins was then hit by a pitch, and Castro struck out to end the threat.

Keone Kela pitched 2 1/3 hitless innings of relief for Spokane, and Travis Dean allowed two hits in a scoreless ninth.

Vasquez got out of a jam in the bottom of the first inning. Ronnie Richardson led off with a single, and Michael Bass followed with a walk. Richardson advanced to second on a fielder’s choice by Donavan Tate, putting runners on first and third with one out. But Vasquez induced a double-play grounder by Trae Santos to end the threat.
