Obituary: Malone, Evelyn Alene (Ryan)

Age 93

MALONE, Evelyn Alene (Ryan) January 9, 1920 - June 22, 2013 Evelyn is survived by her sister Erma, daughter Maureen, son Patrick, daughter-in-law Connie, grandsons Ryan and Sean and a host of nephews and nieces.

She is preceded in death by her husband Jack, brother Glen and nephew Richard.

She leaves a hole in our hearts that can never be filled.

Evelyn had many loves in addition to family.

Some included: camping and swimming at Priest Lake, skiing on Mt.

Spokane, hiking in Banff National Park (especially Lake Louise), learning new concepts at EWU and working for the U.S. Small Business Administration.

In the end, she was comforted by the smiling faces and caring touch of the nurses at Hospice of Spokane and the TouchMark at Waterford.

Mom’s strongest passions, beyond family, were the environment and First Nations peoples.

This was a favorite quote: Do not stand at my grave and weep.

I am not here, I do not sleep.

I am a thousand winds that blow.

I am the diamond glint on snow.

I am the sunlight on ripened grain.

I am the gentle autumn rain.

When you wake in the morning hush, I am the swift uplifting rush of quiet birds in circling flight.

I am the soft starlight at night.

Do not stand at my grave and weep.

I am not there, I do not sleep.

(unnamed American Indian) Mom’s earth stewardship and conservation ethic was richly expressed by her long-standing philanthropy to: Eastern Washington University, The Lands Council, the Sierra Club, the Natural Resources Defense Council, the Nature Conservancy and many First Nation schools and organizations.

Her non-family community commitments included; Hamblen Park Presbyterian Church, the League of Women Voters and the PNW Ski Association.

Her legacy can be honored by further gifts to these organizations.
