Head for the Hills’ dinner

Twenty years ago, in its original location on Sprague Avenue, Hills’ Restaurant and Lounge hosted its first beer dinner for a group of chef Dave Hill’s fellow home brewers.

There have been 33 more since, featuring regional breweries’ lineups paired with Hill’s culinary creations, which incorporate the beer served with each course.

Number 35 has just been announced, Oct. 26 at 6 p.m. with Kootenai River Brewing from Bonners Ferry. The typically mouthwatering menu:

Appetizer: Phyllo bundles filled with pale ale poached shrimp and Gruyere cheese, baked golden brown with a pale ale and sweet pepper sauce. Paired with Kootenai River Pale Ale.

Salad: Savory elk sausage with spicy summer greens and a dried cherry and Scottish ale vinaigrette. Paired with McGreagor Scottish Ale.

Entree: Lightly smoked and porter-marinated culotte steak with local mushrooms, porter roasted garlic and mashed potatoes with butternut squash and porter butter. Paired with Kootenai River Porter.

Dessert: Huckleberry ice cream with porter glaze and a rye ale cookie with huckleberry frosting. Paired with Huckleberry Wheat.

Cost is $49 per person, which includes tax and tip. Bring your growler and you can take home any of the beers being poured for an additional $10.
