Prep roundup: Abby Swanson’s penalty kick in second overtime leads West Valley to 3-2 GNL soccer win over Clarkston

Abby Swanson scored on a penalty kick in the second overtime Thursday to lift West Valley to a 3-2 Great Northern League victory over visiting Clarkston.

The Eagles (4-1-0, 3-0-0 league) were given the spot kick after a handball in the box by the Bantams in the 88th minute.

Jenna Sullens and Ashley Meyer also scored for the Eagles, with Natalie Blair picking up an assist on Meyer’s goal.

Mackinzie Packwood had both of Clarkston’s goals.

WV goaltender Rachel McGlothen made 12 saves.

East Valley 2, Pullman 1: Micaela Verdal tallied a pair of unassisted goals to lead the Knights (2-1-0, 2-1-0 GNL) over the host Greyhounds (0-5-0, 0-2-0). Ann Mari Petrino scored for Pullman, which was outshot 16-4.

Inland Empire 5A

Lake City 4, Coeur d’Alene 1: Havanna Johnson scored two goals and Kelsi Grinde had two assists as the Timberwolves (4-2-0, 1-1-0) defeated the visiting Vikings.

All five goals came after halftime as both teams attacked more in the second half. Sydney Quinby scored for CdA (1-3-0, 0-1-0).

Inland Empire 5A

Lake City 2, Couer d’Alene 0: Kade Murphree scored unassisted in the first minute and Jack Barrett found the back of the net without an assist in the final minutes as the Timberwolves beat the visiting Vikings.

CdA (6-1-0, 1-1-0) played with 10 players for much of the second half after a Vikings defender was sent off for a 42nd-minute red card.

Jared Stone made four saves for LC (4-0-0, 2-0-0) in posting the shutout.

Great Northern

Clarkston 3, West Valley 2: Bantams libero Kayla Snyder had 30 digs and Tory Keimantz and Sontona Jose led Clarkston with 11 kills apiece and the visiting Bantams scored the final eight points of the match to defeat the Eagles 25-17, 25-18, 20-25, 21-25, 15-8.

West Valley led 8-7 in the fifth before Clarkston took advantage of its strong serving to win.

Erin Higbie had a match-high 12 kills for the Eagles.

East Valley 3, Pullman 0: Jordan Phelan had nine kills and 11 digs, Brooklynn Juris added 11 digs and three aces and the Knights cruised past the host Greyhounds 25-16, 25-17, 25-17. Chelsea Bone led Pullman with 12 assist and six aces.

Inland Empire 5A

Coeur d’Alene 3, Lake City 0: The host Vikings swept the Timberwolves 25-16, 15-17, 25-22. No other details were reported.

Inland Empire 4A

Sandpoint 3, Lakeland 0: Amy Shepard had seven kills, Taylor Martin recorded six aces and the Bulldogs swept the visiting Hawks 25-15, 25-23, 25-17.

Kellogg 3, Timberlake 0: Andee Wendt tallied 10 kills and four blocks as the visiting Wildcats defeated the Tigers 25-18, 25-19, 25-12 at Spirit Lake.
