Education Notebook: LC students direct one acts

Lewis and Clark High School’s Tiger Drama Department will present “Thespians’ Choice: Student Directed One-Acts” Thursday and Friday.

A cast and crew of more than 40 students will perform four plays: “Mathematics of Divorce,” “The Diary of Adam & Eve,” “Bleeders” and “Meet the Roommates.”

Student directors are CaraLee Howe (“Mathematics of Divorce”), Chloe Forsberg (“The Diary of Adam & Eve”), Ilan Hernandez (“Bleeders”) and Tailer Englehart-Grotte (“Meet the Roommates”).

Local playwrights Blake King-Krueger and Brian Harnetiaux wrote “Mathematics of Divorce” and “Bleeders,” respectively.

“Thespians’ Choice” will be at Lewis and Clark, 521 W. Fourth Ave., at 7 p.m. Tickets are $5. Visit tigerdrama.com for more information.

Update: Because of school closures after the windstorm, the one acts are being postponed to Dec. 3 and 4.

Two alumni recognized at NC ceremony

North Central High School will name two graduates as distinguished alumni in a ceremony on Tuesday.

Lt. Col. Melanie (Breshears) Ellis graduated from North Central in 1981. She completed the surgical technology program at Spokane Community College before enlisting in the U.S. Air Force in 1987.

She helped the wounded after gunman Dean Melberg opened fire at the Fairchild Air Force Base hospital in 1994 and helped facilitate the evacuation of causalities after the 2012 Benghazi Embassy attack.

Her 28 years in the service have sent her to Belgium, Germany, Ghana, Botswana, Afghanistan, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Korea and Japan. She is currently stationed at Fort Sam Houston near San Antonio.

Larry Nickell graduated from North Central in 1972. He then attended Washington State University and Gonzaga University School of Law.

He was hired as an attorney by the U.S. Department of Treasury and worked for the Department of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms. In 1992, the chief counsel promoted him to assistant chief counsel, a position he held until his death in 2011.

Since 2012, the Larry L. Nickell Award for Legal Advocacy and Professionalism has been given to ATF Counsel employees who meet the highest standard of ethical and responsible legal advocacy while exemplifying Nickell’s contributions to law.

Mt. Spokane raises $3,500 for Second Harvest

Mt. Spokane High School raised $3,500 for Second Harvest through the organization’s month-long Tackle Hunger Campaign.

Students collected donations of $1 for an “I Tackled Hunger” wristband and a mini football during a football game. They also collected money at assemblies and by asking for donations while walking around various neighborhoods.

NW Christian football, soccer teams named academic champs

The Northwest Christian Schools football and boys soccer teams have been named WIAA 2B Academic State Champions. This award is given to teams with the highest GPA among 2B schools in Washington.

The football team had an average GPA of 3.460, and the soccer team had an average GPA of 3.650.

This is the second win for the football team and the third for the soccer team.
