Planned hydroplane race on Lake Coeur d’Alene canceled

Organizers have canceled the Coeur d’Alene Silver Cup H1 Unlimited Hydroplane race planned for this summer, citing an inability to raise enough money to host the race.

The group was only a third of the way to its fundraising goal, said general manager Keith Allen in a press release Friday.

“We started with plenty of time and some money and now even though we have some strong financial commitments, we do not have enough time to put on the race on the weekend of July 16 and 17 this year,” Allen said.

Coeur d’Alene Silver Cup Inc. planned a hydroplane race in 2015 that was also canceled due to a lack of funds.

The group is not associated with the Diamond Cup organization that hosted a hydroplane race on Lake Coeur d’Alene in 2013 but did not pay many of its debts. Before that event hydroplane races were last held in the area in 1968.

Silver Cup organizers say they hope to organize and fund a race in 2017.
