Eastern not making it easy for fans

I am frankly a little puzzled by the thinking in the EWU athletic department. EWU has 6,000 seats at Reese Court for basketball, but it is rarely more than 25 percent full for basketball games.

EWU has some decent men’s and women’s teams. Part of the attendance problem has to be that Saturday home basketball games are played at noon or 2 p.m. That automatically excludes anybody who works on Saturdays.

For students, an early-afternoon game probably does not sound like it would be as fun as a Saturday night game. There are surely more fans who want to see college basketball than the 6,000 who attend GU games, but EWU is not making an effort to attract them.

College refs need more scrutiny

Please, someone needs to adjudicate the referees at the Gonzaga basketball games.

We were in the first row courtside, under the basket. The referees’ ability and one-sided interpretation on some calls were questionable, to say the least. To see a blatant foul committed and then turn to the Gonzaga player, look directly at him and then utter, “So what?” It directly showed his intent and his disdain.

They mauled Domantas Sabonis with high elbows to the face and neck. He took a beating and kept his cool. It is basketball, not WWE. The referees wear the correct uniforms – stripes – and are without any valor.

If you doubt it, get a ticket and witness a game from that view. It is an education, to say the least.
