Newsmakers: Ex-Utah State player Torrey Green charged with sex assault

Charged: A former Utah State football player who was dropped by the Atlanta Falcons over multiple sexual assault allegations was charged Thursday with rape, assault and kidnapping. The Cache County Attorney’s Office filed charges against 22-year-old Torrey Green after spending several months reviewing allegations that multiple women made against Green.

Investigated: Michigan’s attorney general is investigating allegations of sex abuse involving former USA Gymnastics team physician Dr. Larry Nassar, who is accused of sexually abusing two gymnasts. Nassar had taught at the school and worked in its sports medicine clinic before being fired last month for not complying with employee requirements.

Announced: Organizers say Michael Jordan will introduce Russell Westbrook when the Oklahoma City Thunder star is inducted into the Oklahoma Hall of Fame on November 17th.

Named: Coach Jill Ellis’ training camp roster for a pair of U.S. soccer exhibitions against Switzerland features 11 players who have never appeared on the team. The roster includes eight uncapped players from the National Women’s Soccer League and three college players.

Tested: Star Canadian pole vaulter Shawn Barber tested positive for cocaine before the Rio Olympics following a tryst with a woman he met on Craigslist. The 2015 world champion was permitted to compete in Brazil after it was determined he inadvertently ingested trace amounts of the banned substance through kissing.

Victimized: New York Rangers’, Derek Boogaard who died in 2011 of an accidental overdose of prescription painkillers and Jordan Hart, a minor league hockey player who supplied him with pills are victims of organized sports’ lax attitude toward painkillers, said

U.S. District Judge Naomi Buchwald. The judge, though, said there was “no basis” to assert that Hart supplied the drugs that killed Boogaard.

Injured: Australian BMX cyclist Sam Willoughby is in rehab following a training accident that left the 2012 London silver medalist with two fractured vertebrae and no movement below his chest. Willoughby was hurt last month in the crash at the U.S. Olympic Training Center.

Skipped: Because of a back injury that forced him to withdraw during the final two PGA events of the season, Jason Day is skipping the Australian Open and World Cup of Golf.
