Deputies arrest murder suspect Jason Obermiller in Lake Coeur d’Alene cabin

Murder suspect Jason Obermiller was arrested in a cabin on Lake Coeur d’Alene on Tuesday afternoon.

Obermiller, 32, is suspected of killing 2-year-old Adalynn L. Hoyt last week and had been on the run ever since. Adalynn died of a single blow to the stomach, according to the Spokane County medical examiner.

Obermiller was living with the girl’s mother, 28-year-old Lovina Rainey. Rainey told police that she was out drinking and Adalynn and her other three children were in Obermiller’s care when Adalynn was injured, according to court documents.

The owner of a summer cabin in the 3500 block of West Mulsh Way near Worley, Idaho, called deputies Tuesday afternoon after a neighbor reported that someone was staying in the cabin, which was supposed to be empty.

A white SUV that had been recently stolen in Spokane was parked in the driveway when deputies arrived. The man at the cabin gave deputies a false name but one deputy recognized him as Obermiller, according to a Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office news release. He was arrested without incident just before 2 p.m.

Obermiller, who was also wanted on a Kootenai County warrant for driving without a license, is expected to appear in court in Kootenai County on Wednesday to face extradition to Washington. He is also wanted on a Washington Department of Corrections warrant for probation violations.

It appears that Obermiller had been at the cabin for only 24 hours, the news release said. He had previously done work for the cabin’s owner but reportedly did not have permission to be there.

Detectives reported finding a large amount of drugs as well as cash, a gun and a ledger that appeared to list drug sales when they searched the home where Adalynn was found dead, according to court documents. Rainey’s three other children have been removed from the home by Child Protective Services.
