Washington State’s coaches did their best to create even teams for Saturday’s Crimson and Gray game, splitting the starters.

But they could not create two Luke Falks, and he was the primary difference during Crimson’s comfortable win.

The second half of the scrimmage lacked some potency as the starters gradually were replaced by younger and younger players. But Falk, who did not play in the second half, gifted the Crimson underclassmen a 21-3 halftime lead.

Falk finished 21 of 30 for 191 yards and two touchdowns. He made correct reads. When opportunities presented themselves, he took advantage, such as his 43-yard scoring strike to Dezmon Patmon when the receiver created separation from safety Jalen Thompson with a sharp break on his route.

While backup Tyler Hilinski had some great moments, Falk was the difference and showed why his decision to return to WSU for his senior year was the most important part of WSU’s offseason.
