Do Washington residents like eggnog? Do they prefer turkey or ham for Christmas?

Two new maps created with geotagged Twitter data by cooking site seriouslysmoked.com have revealed if Washington and the other states enjoy eggnog for the holidays and if Americans prefer turkey or ham for Christmas.

The Evergreen State, the maps reveal, enjoy the creamy concoction served cold or hot and made all the better with rum. When it comes to choosing a bird or pig, Washington selected Tom Turkey over Porky Pig.

The eggnog map is based on geotagged Twitter data since Dec. 1 tracking sentiment through phrases and hashtags about eggnog, including “I hate eggnog,” “eggnog is delicious” and “I love eggnog,” in every state.

More than 35,000 tweets conveying preferences were tracked during the time period. Eggnog is a holiday beverage that seems to be beloved or reviled, much like candy corn during Halloween.

The second map documenting turkey and ham also is based on geotagged Twitter data since the first of the month, and more than 10,000 tweets were tracked.

In the eggnog map, fans (surprisingly?) were victorious, with 32 states giving thumbs up to 18 saying nay, and the results showed that most of the haters reside in the South and Southwest.

As for whether states preferred a Christmas ham or turkey, turkey is the winner in 34 states to 16, with the South once again and a good number of the Midwest preferring (honey-glazed and spiral-sliced) ham.

The maps were created by seriouslysmoked.com using trends software with access to geotagged Twitter data. Seriouslysmoked.com produces food-related trends maps each month.

Merry Christmas to all, and please pass the (deep-fried) turkey and (spiked) eggnog.
