Vocal Point: We’ve become impersonal technology junkies

Twelve of us sat around a conference room table in Utah, all with cell phones and laptops, all with similar jobs, but from different parts of the country. Not long ago, a group of business folk such as ours would have splintered into a half-dozen side conversations the moment there was a break in the formal discussions. But not this time. Whenever our meeting hit a pause, we all looked down toward our laptops' glowing displays and checked our e-mail, the weather or the stock market, or deftly scrolled through messages on cell phones.

Bond would modernize schools

Residents of the East Valley School District will be asked to approve a $33 million bond on the March 11 ballot, but it shouldn't cost more than residents are already paying for an $11.9 million bond passed in 1996. "Right now our current estimated bond is $1.50 per $1,000 in assessment," said district superintendent Debra Howard. "We don't expect our new bond to be more than that. That was an important piece of our planning, that the new bond will not be more than the retiring bond."

Building foundation for marriage

It's Valentine's Day, and with love in the air and no doubt on the mind of the star-crossed lovers, some people will surely be popping the big question today. Once the object of their affection says "yes," that's when people like Kathy Finley step in. But Finley's not a wedding planner; she teaches a premarital counseling class through St. Aloysius Roman Catholic Church on the campus of Gonzaga University.

Depp shoveling tale a snow job

I'm glad so many enjoyed wondering whether Johnny Depp really helped shovel snow off my roof a couple of weeks ago. The comments on Dave Oliveria's Huckleberries Online have been priceless, with creative bloggers comparing Depp's visit to Rathdrum to their sightings of Elvis Presley driving a snowplow in Spokane and the entire cast of "High School Musical" performing in a pot hole on Spokane Street in Post Falls. Actually, Johnny Depp is probably somewhere sunning in the south of France while we are up here shoveling away. I thought the whole idea so far-fetched it would be easily pegged as a midwinter fantasy. Seems I was wrong. So many know Depp has been in the area and believe he the kind of guy who would help a friend shovel snow off his mother's roof, that the story took on a life of its own. I'm sorry for any misunderstanding. The sexy pirate star was a ploy to help ease the work and worry of the worst winter storm we've faced in many years – seems like it worked.
