NWC putting on Crusader Sports Camp

Northwest Christian School is inviting boys and girls entering first through eighth grades to its Crusader Sports Camp, Tuesday. The camps, which include boys basketball, football and baseball, and girls softball, basketball and volleyball, will be held in four 90-minute sessions each day. Free swim passes available through Spokane Parks Foundation

With temperatures reaching into the 90s this week, qualifying families can find relief from the record-breaking heat through Make a Splash in a Kid’s Life free swim pass handouts along with Free Swim Fridays open to the public. This year, the program, run through the Spokane Parks Foundation, is giving out more than 1,200 passes throughout Spokane County, Heather Beebe-Stevens, executive director of the parks foundation, said. The final two pass handouts will be at Cheney outdoor pool, 750 Cedar St., Friday starting at 4 p.m., and Spokane Valley Partners, 10814 E. Broadway Ave., Monday beginning at 9 a.m.

Gay Pride march celebrates 25th anniversary on Saturday

When Helen Bonser and her friend Marion Hammer first went to talk to downtown business groups about having a gay pride march in Spokane, they got a slightly skeptical reaction. “They looked at us two middle-aged business women and wondered what exactly it was we wanted to do,” Bonser said.
