Commentary: As Gonzaga creeps toward the bubble, could they miss out on the NCAA Tournament?

The Zags have eight games remaining in the regular season. Half are against the top teams in the WCC: Saint Mary's, San Francisco and Santa Clara. A fifth is down the road at Washington State. It would not take much to slide onto the NCAA bubble. Their tournament profile is as wobbly as the defense that has confounded coach Mark Few for weeks.

Predictions for 2025: CFP and NCAA Tournament undergo tweaks as realignment marches on

One week removed from the national championship, we have turned an eye to 2025. The following predictions for major developments (on the field and off) are partly intended to make the Hotline look brilliant but mostly designed to prepare fans for what could be a momentous year in college sports. A year of mass extinction.

No surprise: Gonzaga, Saint Mary’s renew rivalry with a lot on the line in WCC race

Gonzaga vs. Saint Mary’s.Time for the game of the year in the West Coast Conference. At least until the WCC powers square off again Feb. 22 in the Kennel or, as they seemingly do every March in Las Vegas, with another clash at the conference tournament. Just like every season and practically every series meeting over the last decade-plus. Same as it ever was.

Key matchup: Gonzaga’s Ryan Nembhard, Saint Mary’s Augustas Marciulionis a clash of styles

Doesn’t get much better than posts Gonzaga’s Graham Ike and Mitchell Saxen dishing out bruises. Or GU’s Ben Gregg facing Arizona transfer Paulius Murauskas, who has nine double-doubles. All worthy candidates, but the nod here goes to the two best point guards in the West Coast Conference: Gonzaga assists machine Ryan Nembhard and Saint Mary’s counterpart Augustas Marciulionis, the reigning WCC player of the year and conference tournament most outstanding player.

Q&A: Longtime Bay Area reporter breaks down Saturday’s Gonzaga-Saint Mary’s matchup

Gonzaga and Saint Mary’s have had so many memorable showdowns, which stands to reason since one – GU 17 solo regular-season titles – or the other – SMC two solo – or both (three co-championships) have earned West Coast Conference titles since the 2002-03 season. The Zags and Gaels have finished in the top two, typically in that order, 12 of the last 13 years.
