Indiscretion breeds troubles

Joining Steve and Mia this week is guest columnist Smarty Jones. (Yes, the horse.) Q: I've been dating my boyfriend for about three years and we're really great together. Six weeks ago, on a business trip, I ended up having a one-night stand with a man I met in a bar. I don't know what came over me. It was totally stupid. I told myself I would never do anything like that again. But I just found out I'm pregnant. I don't know whose it is. I'm freaking out. What should I do?

Let’s do the time warp – with love

What it is: Most first novels don't make quite the splash of Audrey Niffenegger's "The Time Traveler's Wife." Even before it hit the stands in September of last year, it made headlines when celebrity couple du jour Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston bought the movie rights. The hefty 518-page tome debuted on the New York Times Bestseller List at No. 9, and after it was chosen as the 15th entry in the "Today" show book club series, 100,000 copies were added to the initial print run of 15,000. What's it's about: Clare DeTamble is the title character; her husband, Henry, suffers from Chrono-Displacement Disorder, a genetic abnormality that causes him to frequently disappear from his present and appear – disoriented and stark naked – at some unknown point in his past or future.

Mario back to battle old primate nemesis

Mario's new game has no multiplayer modes, no polished cinematics, no tangled wires and gadgets to connect it to other Game Boys and GameCubes. But this game does have a good dose of fun. "Mario vs. Donkey Kong" is stripped down to the core: This is man vs. beast, with very little else going on. Love it or leave it. At the least, I think you'll like it very much.

Riddickulous

Poor Vin Diesel. He's staked his Hollywood career, his future fortune, nay his very right to call himself Vin Diesel (real name, Mark Vincent) on a "Battlestar Galactica" remake. "The Chronicles of Riddick" is a messy, messianic slasher/blaster in the "Matrix Half-Loaded" tradition, all nonsense plot and baroque costumes, sets and special effects.

TV tests relationships

Far be it for me, a singleton, to comment on what couples should and should not do, but it would seem that confronting the troubling issues in your relationships and airing your dirty laundry on network television would be a definite no-no. And who in their right mind would allow their significant other to date someone else for three weeks all for the chance of winning $100,000? Is it really worth it? Well, those are the rules of "The Ultimate Love Test" (Wednesdays, ABC). Apparently the four couples on the show have hit a crossroads in their relationship, and while they are committed, they still have some doubt as to whether or not they are with "the one."

White River is having a birthday

If you still haven't made the trip across the mountains to see a concert at White River Amphitheatre, south of Seattle, now might be a good time to start making travel plans. On Saturday, the 20,000-seat outdoor venue celebrates its first anniversary by offering all lawn tickets for $20 (including Ticketmaster convenience charges; Ticketmaster handling fees still apply).

You’re God? Me too

One of the first questions children ask their parents is "Where did I come from?" Parents with a sense of humor might say, "From the hospital." Truth is, most of us simply shrug or offer answers tied to organized religion.

all is fair

Let's play a word association game. Ready? OK, the word is: FAIR. Sticky hands. Huckleberry ice cream. Llamas. Sleeveless Van Halen T-shirts. The Gravitron. Bagged goldfish. Screams. Elephant Ears. Squeals. Massage chairs. Bus-size corn dogs. Deep-fried Twinkies. GERMS!

CenterStage set to rock Saturday

TONY BROWN, aka DJ Grand Groove, is no stranger to organizing eclectic shows at CenterStage. At this point, it's become an expected quarterly event. Previous ones have been well-attended by an all-ages crowd that spans from elementary schoolers to college professors. But what's fresh about Brown's latest collaboration – The Eye Opener – is the inclusion of rock bands.

‘Colonial House’ reminds of worst of good old days

What it is: "Colonial House" is the recently aired PBS series of "projects in experiential history." It, like "Manor House," "1900 House" and others before it, drops a group of 21st-century people into life in the past, complete with historically accurate living conditions and hardships. What it's all about: Of course it's a trip back in time for these living-history volunteers, and that comes with the requisite culture shock about the absence of luxuries, free time and, er ... facilities. But it's more than that, because the participants have to cope with and abide by the customs, laws and lifestyles of the past while bringing along their modern-day sensibilities.

‘Contagious joy’ keeps rhythm

When Coeurimba is hammering out its style of traditional Zimbabwean polyrhythms, even the most beat-challenged listener gets caught in the pulse. The six-piece Coeur d'Alene marimba band has been keeping crowds vibing for the nearly two decades it has been sharing the sounds of Africa throughout Washington and Idaho.

Get out of jail in 16 minutes

If you ever get arrested on suspicion of first-degree burglary in Spokane after allegedly breaking into a home and waking the resident up with a beating, there's apparently a surefire way for you to get out of jail. No need for a cake with a file in it. Just hire local attorney Craig Smith, then have him ask Superior Court Judge Neal Rielly to spring you. Make sure Smith says "pretty please" and you might leave the holding cell in 16 minutes. Oh, and one DUI conviction shouldn't make it more difficult for you to get out. That's how blind justice should work for suspected violent burglars in Spokane, if you believe Smith and Rielly's recent statements to The Spokesman-Review. As Thomas Clouse reported, 23-year-old John Powers – who just happens to be the son of a former Spokane mayor of the same name – strolled out of jail 16 minutes after he was booked May 13 under the circumstances outlined above.

How much per gallon?

For good reason, everyone lately has been grousing about the soaring prices of gas and milk. Milk costs about $3.50 a gallon, and regular unleaded gas has topped more than $2 a gallon. And if your car likes to drink fancy schmancy gas – well, just fuhgeddaboutit. Then again, what if we had to buy more things by the gallon? If you look at it that way, gas and milk are a steal!

Keep past in the past

Q: My boyfriend and I are very close and share everything with each other. Recently he asked me about my sexual history. I've done some pretty wild stuff in the past. Should I tell him about it? Or is it better to keep it on the down low? Steve: That's an easy one: No. And don't ask him about his sexual past either. In other words, don't ask, don't tell. No upside on kissing and telling.

Pride week’s activities won’t be short on entertainment

PRIDE WEEK, packed full of events, is coming. Now, I know most of you probably are wondering what Spokane could have for Pride Week that possibly might interest you. Well, drop the pessimism. Pride Week has several fun activities. Definitely check out the films that will be here. Each film fest I've been to in the area has been much better than expected. This is also a primo opportunity to take advantage of my subject last week – dates. I've met several people at Pride activities that have become great friends.
