Chef reincarnates restaurant

After a few years' hiatus, Ian Wingate has brought Moxie back, and to Spokane. No, not in the old-timey, "I gotta say, that kid's sure got moxie" kind of way. To the 33-year-old restaurateur, the word is his dream, his way of life – it's his restaurant. Wingate's first incarnation of Moxie lasted four years, tucked away in a Liberty Lake strip mall. He sold the space to Solstice Restaurant – which is set to close at the end of June – after he was offered the executive chef position at the then set-to-reopen Davenport Hotel. There, he was a decision-maker, helping design the kitchens and menus that have since become some of downtown's fine-dining favorites. But it wasn't enough. He decided it was time to resurrect Moxie at a new location – this time at the old Great Harvest location at 816 W. Sprague Ave. in downtown Spokane.

Choose your favorite moose

Drive into downtown Coeur d'Alene this summer and you can't miss the herd of colorful moose that has taken residence in the city. While the Lake City is no stranger to the occasional stray moose that wanders down from Fernan Saddle, the recent migration is no act of nature, but rather of the creative and civic-minded folks who normally populate the town. The No Moose Left Behind public art project is a fund-raiser for the EXCEL Foundation, a nonprofit that supports innovative educational projects within the Coeur d'Alene School District. Each of the 26 life-size fiberglass moose is sponsored by a local business or organization, decorated by a local artist and will be auctioned Sept. 25 at the Coeur d'Alene Resort.

Coming out is a constant process

When I came out, about five years ago, it was an accident. I was in high school and living at home and had gone out for the evening. When I came home, I had a rather large surprise. I had left letters from my ex-girlfriend open on the computer, and my dad found them. To say the least, this was not how I wanted to come out to my family. Since I was in high school and nervous about being out while still living at home, I pretty much put myself back in the proverbial closet until I moved to Eastern Washington. This experience was both positive and negative. Considering the stories of other gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender persons, I had it pretty easy coming out. My family and I are still very close, and I didn't "lose" anyone in the process of coming out. But the difficulty of being closeted at home gave me a taste of what some had to go through in their lives.

Delicious Dim Sum

What it is: Cantonese for "heart's delight," Chinese dim sum can be as familiar as eggrolls and steamed dumplings or as exotic as chicken feet and jellyfish salad. Though many restaurants serve a standard dim sum menu, the more traditional way of enjoying these delicacies is via strolling waiters who push carts laden with assorted hot and cold dishes through the dining room. What it's all about: The tradition of dim sum originated in Chinese teahouses. Although it was originally taboo to serve tea and food at the same time – some believed the combination would lead to excessive weight gain – after several centuries, teahouse proprietors began serving small snacks to accompany their steaming pots of green tea.

Living your fantasies may cause trouble

Q: I've been with my boyfriend for almost a year. He's hinted in the past that he wanted to have a threesome with one of his guy friends. I always took it as a joke. But it wasn't. Finally I decided to try it. So we do it, and halfway through, my man started to get very jealous and went into the bathroom. I followed and he told me he wanted me to stop. So we did, although me and his friend were like ... "ummm, what just happened?" Long story short, now I can't help but think about that night and want to finish, but my boyfriend doesn't want to. What can I do to forget this whole mess? It's ruining my relationship because I'm so moody. Steve: Your e-mail is a cautionary tale for guys who are always trying to rope their girls into some male fantasy. Be careful what you wish for! You need to tell your boyfriend how you feel. Talking about it might help you forget. But if you really are more interested in his friend, it's time for you to re-evaluate your current relationship.

Secret Service focuses on positive

As far as George W. Bush can see, most of his public appearances draw only supporters. That's because the Secret Service often removes peaceful protesters from the president's view while allowing supporters to stay well in sight of his motorcade. Progressive action groups, including the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now and the National Organization for Women, filed a federal lawsuit last fall seeking to stop government agents from moving critics of the president farther away from his public appearances than supporters. Yet the practice has continued.

Sunless tanners keep you aglow

Temperatures and hemlines are rising – and so are the number of products dedicated to making legs look smooth, soft and glowingly tanned without ever setting foot in the sun (or, fashion forbid, a pair of nylon stockings). We tested nine of the newest bronzers, self-tanners, shimmers and spray-ons. By now, most of us realize that tanning is a health and beauty sin. And we also know that fashion whims and the upcoming heat mean almost no one will want to wear stockings these days – even as the flurry of shorts and thigh-baring skirts puts more attention than ever on legs.

Terminal delight movie review

Despite the glum connotations of its title, "The Terminal" is a joyous movie. It confirms Steven Spielberg as a personal filmmaker and Tom Hanks as an inventive comic actor. From Spielberg's perspective, "The Terminal" points to a happy irony. In 1975, the director's splashy "Jaws" became the harbinger of effects-filled summer blockbuster fodder. And now, 29 years later, in the most effects-laden summer on record, Spielberg directs one of the season's most human stories.

War games demonstrate deadly reality of battle

Game makers usually try to make their war games as realistic as possible. Hearing the whistle of every shell, seeing the detail of every uniform add to the feeling you're actually on the battlefield. But now one developer has taken that realism one step further, realistically re-creating campaigns from the Iraqi battlefields almost as they happen. Kuma Reality Games is taking some heat of its own for its PC game KumaWar, which depicts the Iraq conflict.

A sly, deft makeover of Stepford’s famous wives

"The wives of Stepford have a secret," reads the new poster. But after Ira Levin's best-selling novel, the original 1975 movie and no less than three TV sequels, there's little surprise left to "The Stepford Wives." This new version updates the story. Instead of wanting careers, these women have become too successful at having them, while many of their husbands yearn for domestic Barbies.

A tour of magic and mystery

The music of the Beatles keys up memories of an era of social and political unrest. A time when man first ventured into space, troops were ordered into Vietnam, and the U.S. blockaded Cuba and forced the removal of Soviet missiles.

Flowmotion funks up Mootsy’s

Even though the Seattle groove and funk band is still called Flowmotion, it's more like the new BeeCraft. Enduring in the quintet is the original Spokane rhythm foundation of BeeCraft – the mad-scientific keyboardist Don Goodwyn, his younger brother, tireless drummer Scott, and the unbelievably precise percussionist Bob "Mr. Tasty" Rees.

Garfield’s transition to film nearly purr-fect

America's favorite cat has made the leap from the comic strips to celluloid with most of his arrogance and attitude in place. And it doesn't hurt that he sounds just like Bill Murray. "Garfield the Movie" combines computer animation and live-action to tell the story of Jim Davis' lasagna-loving feline in his feature-film debut. All the other animals and all the humans in the film are real; only Garfield is a computer-generated creation.

Gay community needs unity on gay marriages, unions

Marriage is a touchy issue for a lot of people for varying reasons. It has been a recent subject in the arguments in campaigns between President Bush and candidate John Kerry. It is the topic of debates in states as to whether to allow legal certificates to be issued to gay couples. Some people are getting very heated up about this, and some don't even blink an eye. It is being tossed around in courtrooms, between regional politicians, and on college campuses. Licenses are being handed out by defiant court houses and mayors. This is a tumultuous time. Unfortunately, the issue isn't even clear cut between people in the gay community. Everyone has a different opinion. Personally, I believe that we need to unify ourselves and take action toward equal rights, which is what this is about, not special rights, as several factions believe.
