This is in response to Ike Bailey, who fears that Spokane is becoming Seattle.

Historically, when the Catholic Church learns about guilt and complicity with regard to pedophile priests, they prefer to relocate and even promote those involved in an effort to make the problem go away.

Events have now reached a stage many regard as a crisis in U.S. governance with the recent demand by D. Trump that Congress fund his border wall or he would shut down the government; this demand was considered by the Senate and a bill that would have kept the government running but provided zero funds for the border wall was passed by the Senate. Trump then shut down the government as threatened and financially hurt almost one million workers and disabled many government agencies.

It seems likely that the commander in chief will move more troops from Syria to the Mexican border; ISIS is now defeated, but the refugees from Central America still pose a grave threat. Hmmm.

In response to "Adultery in government," (Rosie Schofhauser, Dec. 22):

For years we have wanted to do more to support the Christmas Fund than just send in a check. This year I volunteered to help with the tear-down when the last customer was served on Dec. 21.

Costco has moved north and created a traffic disaster aided and abetted by the county commissioners who bought this plan with increased accidents and thousands of people driving almost five miles further north to get there.

Almost a third of British children are poor, according to the British Social Metrics Commission (NBC News, Dec. 21). How does Britain compare to Spokane? Does your annual Christmas Bureau indicate how badly off children are? Are annual donations adequate?

My wish for this holiday season - all the time, really - is that we be kind to each other.

Wayne Lythgoe and the hordes of arm-chaired Fox News parrots advocating the best managed forest is a denuded forest are just not living in the real world. Simple logistics and markets have diminished timber harvests more than the hated environmentalists.

In response to Helen Garrett's letter ("What drives Christian voters") published Dec.15.

I have to share a story with everybody. Today I sent my staff to Spokane to purchase all of our needs for our Boys & Girls Club Christmas party this Friday for our kids. Staff came back and informed me that when they were going through the line at Wal-Mart, they were a little over $91 on their purchase. Staff was going to bring some items back in order to be at the limit that they had.

The School Board voted to rebuild Albi Stadium. They're worried about making the voters mad by looking into a combined facility downtown, even though it will save $20,000,000. The voters were not given the third option to combine the stadium with the already green-lighted Sports Complex.

Voters of this community recognized the need to update several aging schools, the value of a viable library system, and were willing to put a sports complex at the Joe Albi site. Whoops, those who know better co-opted the permission and did a bait-and-switch. Now we get another eyesore downtown so we just suck it up and pay.

What the city of Spokane and Mayor Condon have done to the homeless people in our community is downright cruel and heartless. And right around Christmas no less. Where are your souls?!

I am appalled at the lack of courage by the vast majority of Republicans who do not speak out against this dangerously damaging president of our republic. I don't think I have to tell Senators Cantwell and Murray how dangerous he is and how his disregard and disdain for the rule of law, and the truth, is hurting our great nation. The press is the enemy of despots. Never the people.

Mr. Shapiro is an extraordinary young man of the Jewish faith who brings common sense to making life-long decisions for young people. He speaks from a background of faith encourages in his message, to think, process, and learn to speak with words that create solutions to sometimes "crazy" conversation filled with just emotion!

As we are extremely proud of our Edmonton Oilers National Hockey League club up here, we wish to extend to you and all Washingtonians, especially Seattle residents, a huge congrats on becoming the thirty-second NHL franchise. We would like to suggest that the team name be the "Seattle Cranes" after the great radio psychiatrist Brothers Crane (Frasier and Niles) from the hit NBC TV series "Frasier," which ran for eleven years.

I spent the last week of October and the first week of November in southwest Iowa. At least fifty percent of the corn and some beans were still not harvested. They have had an excessive amount of rain with little let-up. Some of the corn may never get harvested.
