WHL notes: Brandon beefs up by adding Reid Gow, Morgan Klimchuk

The Brandon Wheat Kings will make their Memorial Cup charge with a defenseman who served as Spokane Chiefs captain last season. Brandon traded for the rights to 20-year-old Reid Gow on Monday, giving the Spokane Chiefs a fifth-round selection in the 2015 or 2016 Western Hockey League Bantam Draft.

Chiefs will hit halfway point on Wednesday night

The Spokane Chiefs will reach the halfway point of their Western Hockey League schedule tonight with their traditional New Year’s Eve game in Kennewick. Their 72-game schedule may be hitting its middle point, but the Chiefs are at their high point. Spokane (20-12-3-0, 63 points) has won a season-high six consecutive games heading in to its contest against the Tri-City Americans (18-16-0-1, 37) at Toyota Center.

The Spokane Chiefs picked right up where they left off. Powered by shorthanded goals by Calder Brooks and Liam Stewart, and Garret Hughson’s stingy play in net, the Chiefs matched a season high with their fifth consecutive win Saturday night during a 5-1 decision over the Tri-City Americans.
