Year after year, Colfax volleyball one of top programs in state under Sue Doering

The subject of enrollment popped up as Colfax players chatted with Kamiakin parents at the recent Linda Sheridan Volleyball Classic. “They asked us how many kids are in our school,” Colfax senior outside hitter Amara Huber said. “I said, ‘We have less than 200,’ and they said, ‘Oh, we have more than that per grade.’ ”

Central Valley captures first GSL volleyball title

It took nearly 40 years, but the Central Valley Bears can finally raise the banner as Greater Spokane League volleyball champion. Senior Kazlyn Roullier had 12 kills and four blocks, and senior Kara Nitteberg added 20 digs and three aces as the host Bears (23-1-1, 9-0 GSL) held off University 25-20, 21-25, 25-13, 25-22 to cap the league season.

WHL notes: Chiefs’ Kailer Yamamoto will play for U.S. U-17 team

Kailer Yamamoto’s breakout week was followed by a significant honor. The Spokane Chiefs announced Tuesday that the 16-year-old rookie forward and Spokane native has been added to the roster of the United States team that will play at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge in Sarnia, Ontario, from Sunday through Nov. 8.

Chiefs reconfigured No. 1 line scorches Ice

Spokane Chiefs coach Don Nachbaur tinkered with his lineup on Friday night and put Calder Brooks, Adam Helewka and Kailer Yamamoto on the same line. The three produced a goal during a road loss to Seattle, so Nachbaur made the three his No. 1 line for Saturday’s home game against the Kootenay Ice.

WHL notes: Class action lawsuit seeks compensation for major junior hockey players

A class action lawsuit filed in a Toronto court Friday seeks $180 million in compensation from the Canadian Hockey League and its 60 teams in three regional leagues that “conspired” to force thousands of young players into signing contracts that breach minimum wage laws. The lawsuit includes the Western Hockey League and teams such as the Spokane Chiefs.

The Kelowna Rockets have rarely been pushed on their way to a franchise-record 10-0 start, but the Spokane Chiefs gave them a hearty challenge on Friday. Riley Stadel and Madison Bowey scored 59 seconds apart early in the second period to allow the Rockets to turn back Spokane’s challenge with a 3-2 Western Hockey League decision at the Arena.

Liam Stewart scores twice to lead Chiefs past Thunderbirds

Liam Stewart gave the Spokane Chiefs a big lift in the second period and, for good measure, another lift in the third. Stewart scored his team-leading fourth and fifth goals Wednesday night to spark the Chiefs to a 4-1 Western Hockey League victoru over the Seattle Thunderbirds at the Arena, capping three games in six nights between the teams.

WHL notes: Chiefs apologize for anthem incident

Spokane Chiefs general manager Tim Speltz apologized to fans Tuesday night for the actions of three nondressed players during the singing of the national anthem during last Friday’s home game against Seattle. “We sure feel it’s necessary for us to comment and address the inappropriate action of our players,” Speltz told Mike Boyle on 1510-AM before Tuesday’s road game against Seattle. … “When we make mistakes, we have to be responsible.”
